Kenmore 110 Series Washing Machine: Removing Agitator: Any Ideas for Stubborn Bolt?

Hello -

I have a Kenmore Elite Oasis - Model #11027072602. When doing a load the other day, I encountered the ‘LD’ Long Drain error code. Assuming the issue was related to either a faulty or blocked Drain Pump, I went ahead and ordered a replacement on Amazon for ~$25, just so I’d have the part if needed.

After removing the back sheet metal panel, I was pretty sure I saw some loose articles of clothing through the clear tub - which I thought might be causing the issue. Using a flathead screwdriver, I popped the top portion of the washer (directly below the lid) and unsnapped the several tabs holding the clear plastic tub ring in place. At this point, even if removing the agitator and spin basket WASN’T necessary to remove any stray handtowels or socks that had gotten stuck between the basket and tub (which I think it is), the amount of gunk and just general grossness caked on the tub made me want to remove it so I could give it a good wash.

Problem is, the bolt under the agitator cap won’t budge AT ALL. I’ve tried everything - WD-40, hammering lightly with a mallet to try and unfreeze, speeder bars and regular socket wrenches. The 7/16 bolt just won’t break free.

After hours of trying, I gave up and decided to inspect the pump to see if I could at least get the washer back to a functional state. After setting it on its side, I could immediately see that one of the two blue wires running into the old Drain Pump had jarred free and was just dangling. At that point I decided to just replace the pump (knowing it was 23 years old and probably due), and because I couldn’t get the loose wire to stay in its slot, I soldered both wire connections. Put everything back together and the washer successfully did a self-clean cycle - but I’m definitely still seeing at least 2 hand towels and a sock spinning around the clear tub.

Two questions I’m hoping for help with:

How in the world can I remove the stubborn and frozen 7/16 agitator bolt so I can lift the basket and tub?

I assume the stray clothing thats between the basket and tub isn’t good for the washer. How critical is it to remove? Will this cause premature wear on the pump? Is there anyway to access the socks/towels withoutremoving the basket?

Thank you!

Refrigerator: SKU36620ne/18 - Cant convince the new motherboard to be cool again.

Hi everyone,

I have a Bosch no-frost fridge/freezer, model KSU36620NE/18, FD8302. It is in very clean condition and was previously used only seasonally. I received it from a relative after it failed and was replaced.

I am trying to repair it. I replaced the mainboard with a new board that was sold to me as identical/compatible, but the cooling cycle is still not behaving correctly.

The main problem seems to be that the refrigerator section temperature is not being interpreted correctly by the control board. I cannot measure subzero freezer temperatures accurately, so I am not sure if the freezer control is also affected.

What happens:
- The unit can cool both sections.
- The fan runs for a while, then stops.
- After that, the fan does not restart when it should.
- Changing the temperature setting does not seem to influence the fan correctly.

Examples:
- If the fridge section is around +5°C and I lower the target to +2°C, the fan does not start, even after power cycling the unit.
- If the fridge section is around +4°C and I raise the target to +6°C, the fan may still run anyway.

So the board does not seem to react logically to the actual fridge temperature or the selected target temperature.

Because of this, I suspect one of these:
- Fridge temperature sensor / NTC problem
- Sensor wiring or connector pinout mismatch
- Wrong or incompatible mainboard despite being sold as compatible

I am planning to order a new temperature sensor from the same website that sold me the motherboard.

Board and cable connector lineup:
https://iili.io/CiTOG5u.jpg

Cable connection to the new motherboard. Notice the extra pin on the right that is not connected:
https://iili.io/CiTNl9a.jpg

The large harness connector has some empty pin positions. Is this normal for this model?

The fan seems to be a 220-240V fan. Would it be a reasonable temporary workaround to power the fan independently using a thermal AC switch?
https://iili.io/CiTLKPe.webp

Or would that not work properly if this model has an air damper/flap controlled by the mainboard?

Any advice from someone familiar with Bosch KSU models would be appreciated.

Kenmore Refrigerator: Is there insulation that can swell and keep fridge door from closing?

First, thank you for your help about the automatic defroster. I had doubts but now I know it is working fine and the drain is fine too.

I have read somewhere that in some models there is foam insulation in the bottom that can swell when it gets wet, and does not un-swell later, and that it can keep the door from shutting all the way. Is this possible? If so, is it not possible to get underneath and cut out a little bit of the insulation with a knife?

Background: I have a freezer-on-top model built in 1979 which has worked fine all these years (replaced a fan once and maybe another small part) . Now water is falling from the bottom of the freezer, so much that it sometimes wets the floor. The fridge door remains open an eighth of an inch. When I push on the bottom of the door, it closes and so does the top, but when I push on the top, it closes but the bottom does not.

I've run a straight-edge along the fridge just below the food area, and it does seem to bulge out a tiny bit in the middle. Of course the effect is double by time the door gets to side that opens. I've thought about putting a 2x4 there and pounding the bulge back with a hammer, but I'm afraid I'll bend and then break a cooling coil , instead of just crushing the expanded foam (which I gather would still have uncompressible water filling what had been air spaces????)

Is hitting the area with a hammer risky? It's the quickest most direct idea. Getting under the fridge to cut out insulation with a knife seems very difficult given how crowded it is there. Tipping the fridge on its back or side might work but the kitchen is small and I'm 79 and would have to find a helper.

Is anything I've said here true? Is there insulation that bulges? Can it be partly removed? Is hitting it with a hammer likely to break the fridge before it gets rid of the bulge? LOL

I've thought about replacing the whole door gasket but I'm not sure a new one would stick out farther than the current one, and it's a lot of work, and if the problem is a bulge, that problem should be addressed directly if possible, instead of a work-around.

GE Refrigerator: Why are my fridge and freezer not cooling?

Earlier today I noticed that a bottle of juice I put in the fridge last night wasn't cold. The temperature control for the freezer said -10 (should be 0) and the fridge said 57 (should be 37). I've tried to reset the controls, to no avail. I unplugged it, vacuumed off the back (although there wasn't much to vacuum) and plugged it in again. It's only getting warmer. Any ideas? I don't remember exactly when I bought the fridge, but I believe it's less than 10 years old.

UPDATE: The fridge is 7 years old. Also, the freezer is now at 2 and the fridge is at 63. So the temp of the freezer is moving in the right direction, but the fridge is definitely not.

I sure hope AB Cellars sees this. He was amazing when I posted about my clothes dryer.

ANOTHER UPDATE: The GE Technician just arrived. It's the freezer sensor (aka thermistor). I'm getting 50% off parts and labor, so my total cost is $146.77 (including the service call).

Thanks everyone for your help! Mayer... you nailed it. The evaporator coils were covered in ice.
