Hello everyone,

I have a problem with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM (first generation) and I would like to know if anyone has experienced something similar.

The lens works perfectly when set to 24mm. I can take pictures normally without any problems.

However, as soon as I rotate the zoom ring even slightly beyond 24mm — for example, at around 30mm — the camera becomes completely unresponsive when I try to take a picture. The shutter does not operate and the camera appears to be frozen.

There is no error message or Err 01 displayed.

The only way to recover the camera is to turn it off and turn it back on.

The problem is completely reproducible and seems to depend specifically on the zoom position:

24mm: everything works normally
Around 30mm and above: the camera freezes when I try to take a picture
No error message is displayed
I have to power the camera off and on again to recover it
The problem occurs again every time I zoom past the problematic position

I have tested the lens on multiple Canon camera bodies, including different models from the 5D, 6D and 7D series, and the behavior is the same with all of them.

Therefore, I believe the problem is definitely related to the lens rather than to a particular camera body.

I am aware that the first-generation EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is known for problems with the aperture flex cable, and I have found several reports of Err 01 and aperture failures related to this cable.

However, my case seems slightly different because:

There is no Err 01 or other error message.
The camera freezes specifically when the lens is zoomed beyond a certain focal length.
At 24mm the lens works normally.
The problem occurs consistently on different Canon camera bodies.

Could this still be caused by the aperture flex cable, perhaps because the cable or another internal flex cable is being moved or stressed when the lens is zoomed?

Could there be another component inside the lens that changes position mechanically during zooming and causes an electrical connection problem?

Has anyone experienced this exact or similar behavior, especially a 24-105mm that works at 24mm but causes the camera to freeze as soon as it is zoomed to around 30mm or beyond?

I would especially appreciate feedback from anyone who has opened or repaired this lens and might know which internal component could cause a problem that is dependent on the zoom position.

I own a canon 18-55mm is ii. The small flex cable that tucks into the inners of the mount ring and plugs directly into the main board. Looks like a capital g. Any ideas?

So I got a used camera and a lens, but when it arrived, and I tried testing it out, it didn't function properly. I tried to autofocus for a landscape picture and I heard a clicking noise, and it wouldn't go up from .7 meters. I thought it might be that the auto focus was broken, but when I tried manual, it was the same result. The little dial for the focus would turn after that .7 mark, but both the focus and the meter on top wouldn't change. I will attach a few pictures of the lens and the model of the lens. There will also be an image of the little bar and where it's stuck on.

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM: Optical Element Alignment After Disassembly

I have a Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM. The MF ring doesn't work but the AF works most of the time. Sometimes the AF seems to "get lost" and doesn't want to focus, but will eventually start working again. My guess is that the encoder disk is dirty or scratched, affecting the AF. The MF ring is probably slipping. I am thinking about taking the lens apart in an attempt to see what's going on. What is holding me back is that I have read that the optical elements must be realigned following any disassembly and it is not exactly DIY friendly. I am interested in opinions from people who have done similar disassembly/repairs like this, and what their outcomes were.

I bought the camera with a used lens, and when I try to use the AF, it always gets "stuck" and if the focus is very close, it doesn't move at all (when it's open, it closes and then gets stuck), I have also noticed that the zoom movement is not as smooth as it should be (mainly when I am at 22mm), it gets slightly stuck and then works normally. I have already tried other lenses and the AF with my body (Canon T5) works perfectly. Is it feasible to try to repair it?

Hi!

I have an issue with my 14-24 mm AF-S f2,8 lens.

Primary Symptoms:

AF Stall/Slip: When activating autofocus, the SWM attempts to engage, resulting in a slight "twitch" of the focus ring, but the internal elements fail to move. The camera eventually times out.
Mechanical Manual Override: Holding the focus ring or manually rotating it during the AF attempt temporarily restores functionality, suggesting a loss of friction in the internal coupling.
Tactile Play: There is a noticeable "gap" or loss of resistance at specific points during manual rotation of the focus ring, indicating potential wear in the friction clutch or helicoid tolerances.

When I hold the focus ring it obviously cannot AF stall or slip, and then the AF focus works perfectly. But it feels totally wrong to hold the focusing ring, especially because I never have to do that with any other lens that I own (plenty of them AF-S, primes, zooms, you name it).

What can be the reason for this? If I attempt disassembly, what should I focus on? Could it be the focus brush that needs to be replaced or cared for? Or is this a symptom of how the focus motor is dying?

Hi,

I have dropped my nikkor 70-200 afs 2.8G II ED with my camera. I sent them to repair store and apparently they fixed it but I realised that since then my auto-focus with that lens doesn’t seem to work as I get blurry photos. Can someone help me to fix it?

Canon EFS 18-55 IS Kit lens: Kit lens autofocus not focusing properly

Good afternoon everyone,

Today i present my trusty old 18-55 kit lens (F3.5-5.6) which has been gradually failing. I was teaching someone a bit about cameras and were trying to take photos and it just stopped. When holding the shutter button down half way, the lens focus ring barely moves if at all. This either requires me to manually focus my shots now or use my other non-IS lens (my 75-300 EF).

I use a 450D ancient camera and i have verified the aforementioned zoom lens works with AF perfectly, however not the kit lens.

I would assume my AF motor is toast however does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this apart from tearing it down (I'm going into this blind as there are no guides on ifixit for this seemingly common place lens).

Hello, Got a Canon pakkage with Canon EOS 600D camera and two lenses; a 50mm-0,45m/1,5ft and a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II. The 50mm lens is working good, but the 18-55mm lens doesn't turn the camera on. The fisrt two times i tried this lens, it was working. After that it didn't anymore. Took out the simcard and batterypack and disconnected the lens. Put everything back in place and the camera was working for a small period of time. Now the camera doesn't turn on with the 18-55mm lens; camera still works good with 50mm lens. Do you have any suggestions? thank you, greetzzz, André
