FixHub Smart Soldering Iron: FixHub Web Console Connection Error on Ubuntu(Solved: user permission)

I was encountering a "Connection error" when trying to connect my FixHub Smart Soldering Iron to the web console at ifixit.com/fixhub/console. I am running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS and using the latest Google Chrome browser.

The error message stated: "Make sure you do not already have another connection open and try again."

I tried the following troubleshooting steps without success:

Fresh boot with no other applications or browser tabs open.
Tried multiple USB ports.

The solution that worked for me was adding my user account to the dialout group. I used the command: sudo usermod -a -G dialout (replacing with my actual username). After running this command and then logging out and back in, I verified I was added to the group using groups and was then able to connect to the web console successfully after a reboot.

This seems to be a common permission issue on Linux systems for accessing serial ports.

FixHub Smart Soldering Iron: Smart Soldering Iron doesn't heat up, blinks blue 3x when on.

I'm using the iFixit Smart Soldering Iron with an iFixit 65 watt fast charger. Plugging them on together causes the indicator LED to just keep flashing blue 3 times fast.

I just updated the firmware and reset settings on the web console.

I'm using the provided USB-c cable.

What am I doing wrong? Why doesn't the manual have the error codes for the LED indicator light in a troubleshooting section?

FixHub Smart Soldering Iron: Options for heatset inserts

Hi everyone,

I've recently started using heat-set inserts in some of my 3D print designs, but I've run into a small issue — the only soldering iron I own is the iFixit one, and unfortunately, it doesn’t currently offer a tip designed for heat-set inserts.

Has anyone had any success using any of the four standard tips for this purpose? Or is a dedicated soldering iron with a compatible insert tip the only real option?

Would love to hear your experiences or any creative workarounds you've found!

I bought the FixHub Smart Soldering Iron from them at a booth at a Makers Fair. The guy didn't mention that I had to use their overpriced power supply but did try to sell me one. When I just wanted the iron he didn't dissuade me... But I can't find the answer to this question on their site - they only address their own power supplies in all the literature (etc.). Anyone know ?

Is there any documentation for using the serial console when directly connecting the smart soldering iron to a PC?

The web console is great but not always an option if you are in an offline environment. I see that there is a basic help command but it does not seem to give much detail on individual command usage.

I just unboxed my NEW Fixhub. Everything seems to work fine except for....

Is there some form of release for the tip? I saw a guy on line just pull it straight out. Mine doesn't do that. It doesn't rotate around or move in any way.

FixHub Smart Soldering Iron: Soldering Iron failed firmware update

I tried to update the firmware on my FixHub Soldering Iron. But the update failed partway through and now the iron seems bricked. It isn't recognized by either the Power Station or a computer.

Is there anyway to fix this?

FixHub Smart Soldering Iron: Does this have a "power bank keep alive" feature?

Does the iron itself have a feature that can keep a power bank alive? Some power banks will shut down if the device does not draw enough power.

Other popular USB soldering irons can do a "power pulse", draw a bit of extra power once every few seconds, which will keep a power bank "alive".
