Mac mini Model A1176: Dead Mac mini with no obvious damage

i received a mac mini with no signs of life.

there is no visual damage on the logicboard.

i removed the logic board and found some markings on the board.

testpoints at the following parts on the bottom side are marked "pink": U6400, U6410, U9500. those areas/parts are marked "blue": the circuits between R9537/C9522 and C9525/R9540, the printed text of L4732/R4732/R4733.

on the top side is only one "red" marking on C9521.

i've read a few things of other dying minis, some suffered the "failing fan issue" - but i don't think that those things are related. others died during the setup/update of 10.6.3.

the pram battery had 2.99v - but nothing changed after replacing it with a new battery.

and please - no "get a new mini" or "replace the logic board" answers.

i want to know if those computers are fixable or not - there are way to much minis out there that could do a great job in those times (mine is a 2ghz c2d with 2gb ram - not a "crappy" old 1.5 core solo)

the cpu isn't the problem, tired it with different ones, the brick works too - tested on another mini and it delivers around 18.5v to the board

any useful suggestions??

Mac Mini Mid 2010: Will a 2012 Mac Mini logic board fit in a 2010 model?

I am thinking about building/cannibalizing a Mac Mini(s) in order to make one functional Mac Mini with the 2.6Ghz i7 Quad Core Logic board AND optical drive in a 2010 model shell. I am aware of the inherent difficulties in such an endeavor. I've seen various posts stating they've done a 2010 - 2011/2012 model swap, but my main question is whether the 2.6 quad i7 will fit in a 2010 shell along with an optical drive. I've only seen a few low quality pictures of the logic board itself, and it appears to have large heat sinks that take up quite a bit of space compared to other boards. Price being barred of course (this is as much a project for me, as it is for the final product).

Mac mini Late 2018: 2018 Mac mini won't turn on

Hi all

Already had another working 2018 Mac mini, so I switched the logicboard, so to test the power supply......the already working Mac mini still turn on with the psu of the system that doesn't turn on, so the psu is not the problem, tried the bad system with the psu of the one that's operational...still nothing...no light, no sound, just completely dead......also tried the fix for systems that shows same symptoms after an update (T2 restore steps with Apple Configurator). still don't see the system......so I am inclining myself to a bad chip somewhere in the logic board.....is there any basic troubleshooting steps that I can use to measure transistors continuity or any other steps that anyone is aware of...thanks!!

Mac mini M2: Can the Mac Mini M2 be upgraded?

I recently acquired a Mac Mini with the M2 chip. Its the standard base configuration which is not bad for my environment, but I would like to know before I crack it open if the memory is soldered on the motherboard and is the SSD soldered as well.
Mac Mini Late 2012: Complete Dead - How To Check Power Supply Vs Logic Board

System is normally on since purchasing new in December 2012. Was working fine yesterday morning but when went to use it last night it was dead. Completely dead - no startup chime no LED on front no sound whatsoever. Took the bottom circular twist cover off and a significant amount of dirt in there. Pretty much a matt filling the circular cover. Disconnected all peripherals and plugged into a known working outlet. No sound, no fan, no HDD, no LED. I suspect either power supply or logic board but open to other ideas. How can I approach this methodically? Can I test for voltage on a power supply cable? (If so, which one, which terminals?)

Mac Mini: (SOLVED!)Mac Mini doesn't recognize aluminum keyboard startup strokes?

I have a Mac Mini 2006 model with SL installed on it, updated to the latest version. I recently decided to try booting a Linux live CD on the Mac, so I inserted the disc, and restarted the machine.

Interestingly enough, the Mac wouldn't recognize my startup keystrokes. I tried the "C" "Option" and other key combinations, but the Mac continued to boot as normal, straight to my desktop.

I have the new USB wired Apple aluminum keyboard with the two USB 2.0 ports on it, and the Mini simply won't recognize it at startup. The keyboard works fine once I get to the login screen.

To ensure that nothing else was wrong, I plugged in a generic Acer PC keyboard, and rebooted again.

The Mini recognized the keystrokes! I was able to use "C" "Option" and the other keystrokes without fail, and the disc booted properly. But when I used the Apple keyboard, there was no such luck. I ensured that both keyboards were plugged into the same USB port when I tried them both, just to be sure it wasn't a faulty USB port problem.

Could it be that the aluminum keyboard, due to its USB hub, draws too much power from the Mini's power supply, so that it isn't loaded until after the boot sequence is finished? I do have other evidence which may support this theory.

I attached an external USB-powered hard drive to one of the keyboard's ports, and I received the "Device is drawing too much power" error message from the Mini. However, when I plugged the exact same keyboard and external into a Macbook Pro, there was no issue, and the drive was recognized normally.

It could be that the Mini's PSU isn't powerful enough to supply the necessary current to the keyboard's hub, and hence it is ignored at bootup. Is this true, or is there something else I am missing entirely?

Mac Mini Mid 2011: IR connector broken - do I need to repair or remove?

Hello!

I had what seems to be a classic error while upgrading my Mid-2011 Mac Mini hard drive to an SSD and broke my IR connector. I unfortunately didn’t grab a picture and don’t especially want take it apart again.

What I did was attempt to pry up the clip and 3/5 of the connector bay came up with it. So part of the bay is still attached, although one pin came off entirely, and the rest is just floating there.

From what I gather thus far in my reading, I can live without the IR connector as I don’t use a remote and don’t care about the on light.

My question is, however: am I going to cause a short or any ill-fate to my computer by just leaving this connector hovering above the spot it’s supposed to attach to the logic board? Do I need to either fix it or remove it entirely?

Thanks for your help!

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Clean layout; should set an example for web design; and one question..

Beautiful layout! As per your observation that there is room in the mini for a second hard drive (assuming this "emptiness" is not actually for airflow and heat dissipation), and without SPECIFIC knowledge, can you foresee a way to add a second hard drive, even without the presence of a second SATA cable? (This looks like a job for...OWC!)

Oh--and is it SATA III or II?

And, if this were to be a "go," is a hardware Zero Striped RAID utterly out of the question? In countless benchmarks, Zero Striped RAIDs have shown a 90 - 100% increase in read/write bandwidth over single drives, and hard drives are the "weakest link" in feeding RAM to in turn feed the CPU (which is tapping its foot waiting).

I know there are software RAIDs, but parity calculations are performed by the CPU, and I don't know what kind of overall system performance hit this exacts. Do software RAIDs increase performance AT ALL? (Good RAID cards have high clock speed on-board I/O processors that takes care of all of this.)

The benchmarks that are coming out show that the "Server" mini is the fastest (like 33% faster than the best configured dual-core mini). For a little more, the server model gives you two 500GB hard drives and a quad-core i7 with 6MB L3 cache.

But it accomplishes this impressive speed while equipped with only the effete Intel integrated graphics (which suggests to me that Grand Central Dispatch and libdispatch have advanced far more than OpenCL and any other GPGPU considerations -- as the AMD/ATI discrete graphics doesn't seem to be helping much over the Server mini's Intel integrated graphics, no?).

Finally (I lied. I've asked more than one question, but at the outset, I had only one -- I SWEAR!), what's with IR?

Why not Bluetooth for remote control? In my living room, when someone is relaxing in the recliner near the TV, I have to stand up, raise the remote over my head every time I want to change channels, operate the DVD player, or DVR. I see no excuse to sort of "deprecate" IR on computers, TVs and all other consumer electronics in favor of Bluetooth.

Finally (I mean it this time) what's with "Near Field Communications"? Again, why not Bluetooth?

Thanks and sorry,
