Dell Latitude 5420: Help / advice regarding Dell Latitude 14 5420

Hey fellow fixers,

I am new to laptop fixing and recently got a pretty rugged Dell Latitude 14 5420 (256GB, 16GB) for 30 bucks. It was so cheap because the display didn't work. Since then, I have updated the HDD to 1TB and RAM to 32 GB. That seems to have worked well.

I am using it with disconnected bezel cable, otherwise, it didn't let me see BIOS to install ubuntu and then I kept it like this because resolutions are better (camera doesn't work, I use driodcam + phone for that).

However, I need advice regarding the following:

What component is broken when screen doesn't function?

Here is how it looks like in video / picture. Is this a screen issue or a connection issue. Note that it looks broken physically but there aren't physical cracks, this is just visual. If screen replacement doesn't work, I am okay with that (since I bought it to use it more or less like a PC)

2. This is slightly bigger issue. When I disconnect the device from AC power (USB C that does both power and display). The machine turns off. All the BIOS / OS level diagnostics show that battery is healthy and charging (I have also seen it discharge).

I am getting the following error code too. It continuously blinks this signature, however, 4 amber and 1 white is not listed on the manual: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-...

Regarding 2, maybe that's 3 amber and 1 white i.e. CMOS battery failure, that would indicate probably why it turns off when AC power is disconnected? Diagnostics don't catch it though.

Happy to post pictures of the mother board. Please advice.

Update (01/30/25)

Okay, the 2nd issue is fixed with a CMOS reset. I just disconnected the coin battery for a minute and viola, the error code is gone and it works on battery now.

loq: Battery hack: how to replace/upgrade to an 80Wh battery?

Hello,

has someone practice or did a battery upgrade from the original 60Wh to an 80Wh battery?

Some say that the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (2023, or 16IRH8,) battery can fit with a little mod to the direction of the cable (LOQ is left side, Legion is right side): Genuine battery for Legion 5 is 80Wh, L22C4PC2 (or 5B11K38740), 15.44V, 5200mAh.

Regards,

Google Pixelbook: Cannot boot. Screen stays black.

This is a Google Pixelbook (i5, 8 GB RAM, 128GB) bought in 2018 and out of warranty.

Last Sunday, after a software update, pixelbook rebooted andafter a while the screen turned black and since then I haven’t been able to boot it up.

When I plug the charger, led is solid green. But if I try a boot, a hard reset, or anythin else, nothing happens (except at the led level there is some activity)

I have a case opened at google support but because this is out of warranty, agent was pessimistic that they can do anything.

Here it what I have already tested:

standard boot but pushing power button: nothing

hardware reset - Holding refresh and pressing power

recovery mode - Holding Refresh and Escape and pressing power

another one - Connect the charger to the Chrome OS device. Hold the side power button + Refresh key and remove the power adapter as they keep holding on those buttons. Wait for 1 minute. Press the side power button to test the device. Connect the power adapter and monitor the LED color. Device should try to turn on and LED should blink or have solid color.

Nothing has helped so I guess there is an hardware issue. Do you think it could be the motherboard to be replaced ? I am tempted to try to follow - Google Pixelbook Motherboard Replacement

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58: Acer laptop only stays on while holding Windows key

My Acer laptop won't turn on with the power button. The only way to turn it on is by holding Windows + Space together, and it stays on only as long as I keep the Windows key pressed. The moment I release it, the laptop shuts off immediately. Could this be caused by a dead CMOS battery, or is it likely a faulty keyboard / motherboard issue?
