PlayStation 5: PS5 powering off after a couple seconds

PS5 came into my shop for a broken HDMI port. The HDMI port was replaced successfully, ps5 was reassembled, tested, and returned to the customer. The customer then called back reporting that it was shutting off on them. I directed him to bring it back in, we tested it, and it didn’t shut off for us while he was standing there. We waited for about 5 minutes for it to shut off and I asked him how long it normally takes. He told me it was almost immediately, like 5 seconds, and this was the longest it had been on. I told him I would test it for a little bit longer, so he ended up leaving it with me. After about a total of 7 minutes, 2 minutes after he left, the PS5 finally shut off.

I assumed this was a thermal event considering it shut off for him after 5 seconds, but had stayed on for longer with me, and decided to order some new Liquid Metal. I removed the old Liquid Metal, fully cleaned the APU and the heatsink and reapplied a drop to the APU and another slightly smaller drop to the heatsink. I was successful in fully spreading the Liquid Metal across the APU and heatsink, and reassembled it again. The ps5 powered up, stayed on for about 15-20 seconds, then shut off again. I turned it on again, this time it stayed on for about 5-10 seconds and shut off.

This is the issue that was happening before reapplying Liquid Metal, which leads me to believe it’s not related to Liquid Metal, but I have no idea what it could be related to and what else I should look into. Any help is appreciated.

PlayStation 5: 3 beeps issue and is the ifixit ps5 power supply returnable?

So, for the last 2 weeks my PS5 would just completely shut off after long (4-6 hrs) PS5 gaming sessions of one particular game. Didn't have this same problem while idling on home screen, running Netflix or less demanding games. The only way to get it back on was after I removed the power plug for quite a while. I usually let it sit off for several hours before even trying to play again. However today after it cut out and I plugging it back in, the PS5 gives 3 beeps 2-3 seconds after plug in and won't boot back up..

My suspicion is the power supply went out because I used it A LOT since 11/2020 and never cleaned it out (I'm lazy 🤷‍♂️)... Bad move, I know.

I feel very comfortable opening it and want to try replacing the power supply. However, if a functioning power supply doesn't actually fix this and I end up not needing it, are their power supplies returnable? How would that go? Can I pay them the return shipping and they just send me a label? I'm paralyzed and in a wheelchair so that would make it much more convenient for me. I don't mind paying a few bucks to try this way but really don't want to lose the full $100. Especially since if it doesn't fix it I'll end up having to drop $500 on a new console.

So any help / opinions about...

1) my console not booting up and if the odds are it IS the power supply AND

2) my questions about returning it if it ends up not fixing my power issue

... would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! 🙂

PlayStation 5: My PS5 got fried during a lightning storm. Is there any way to fix it?

About a week ago, we were hit with a thunderstorm. I guess a strike hit a power line near us and overloaded our breaker which set the basement on fire. It was a small fire we were able to put out on our own, but various items got fried; my PS5 being one of them. We're covered by insurance so replacing it wouldn't be an issue, but I want to keep all my save data. I don't think I was subscribed to PS+ so it's not cloud saved. Is there a way to diagnose and fix the problem? If not that, then is there a way to get the data from my console before I sell it for parts or repair? I'd prefer the second outcome since I'd get a nice chunk of change and a new PS5 for basically free.

Thank you.

PlayStation 5: What is the real answer

I don't have a plalystation 5 console yet, interested in getting one, but I do have a question that seems to have conflicting answers.

Is the playstation 5 disc drive paired to the motherboard?

Some say yes and some say no. Who knows for sure?

I ask this because I don't have a problem swapping out a motherboard and a disc drive, but I find it hard to believe that Sony would go down this path. With playstation 3 and 4, you left the daughter board in and took out the disc drive if it broke which I have done on both systems.

So with every disc version playstation 5 sold to consumers, we all will have to get motherboards and disc drives which will cost almost as much as a playstation 5 console if the disc drive breaks?

There is no daughter board with the playstation 5. Or can you switch disk drives and everything still works?

So if you have a playstation 5 console with a disc drive, does it make more sense to just get another console of the same type and do a data transfer or do you spend the money and get a paired playstation 5 console and disc drive.

PlayStation 5: Can anyone help me find a security screw bit?

Hello all!

I have a custom PS5 controller that I'm trying to tear down and clean out, and it appears they used 4 different security screws for the shell. The 2 IFixIt kits that I have had bits for 3 out of the 4. This last one appears to be a pentagon shape with a pin in the middle.

Ordered what I hoped would help from Amazon, but they appear to be too big. As far as a size example, a Torx TR6 security bit seems to be close to a perfect match

PlayStation 5: PS5 Launch Model (CFI-1000) Thermal Overhaul & Ethernet Disconnect Fix

Hi everyone,

I’m currently performing a deep thermal maintenance on my launch-day PS5 (2020).

For a long time, I've dealt with fast heat-up times and the "LAN Cable Disconnected" error that triggers specifically when the console gets hot.

(note: I am not an expert and before I started I did some research (YouTube, Reddit, iFixit, Gemini) and I want to share what I found.)

Upon teardown, I confirmed "dry spots" on the APU (Liquid Metal oxidation/shifting). I have already reapplied the Liquid Metal, and now moving on to the thermal putty phase.

I want to go beyond the factory application of thermal putty (by adding it to more areas) to achieve better heat dissipation to the shield/heatsink.

I’m planning to use the Upsiren UTP-8 thermal putty.

To solve the LAN disconnects, I intend to bridge the gap between the Ethernet port housing and the main metal shielding with the thermal putty to help sink heat away from the controller chip.

Q:

1. Looking at the marked images, are there any risks of "over-padding" specific areas that might prevent the plates from seating flush?

2. Has anyone had success specifically using thermal putty to stop the Ethernet port from overheating?

3. Are there any "hidden" hotspots on the 2020 model I should hit while I have it open?

Hoping this helps anyone else and I will be sharing my results after a few months from now. Thanks in advance 🙏
