Western Digital My Book Live: Unable to read device, USB module not working

Hey, i have a 2 tb wd my book external HDD, and recently it has stopped working.

The drive receives power and the light will blink on and off constantly. It is not detected by the pc.

This means that the USB module has become damaged.

I have had this same problem happen to another WD external, and it was not covered in warranty so i had to open the case, voiding the warranty, and use the HDD inside as an internal in my PC.

I dont want the same fate for the 2nd one as well, any way that i can repair it myself?

i was using it a couple days before and everything is normal. then, when i try to plug it again on my laptop, it does not power up. not pretty sure if it is the power supply. I checked my usb cable and it seems its okay… what might be the problem?

I'm looking to upgrade the internal storage in my 2008 Intel XServe, but I really don't want to pay $549.00 for a 2TB Apple Drive Module (and I'd really need three of them). Does anyone know the kind of hard drive(s) that Apple uses in their ADM's? I know the model number will probably be slightly off, I'm simply trying to get as close to the real thing as possible.

Servers: Advice wanted on running servers

I recently started a new job in data destruction, but i’ve never had hands on experience running servers. I had a basic computer/printer repair business before this. My only coworker is not a fan of sharing information, so I guess i’m trying to figure out how their system works. For example there seem to be a thousand cat5’s coming out of this thing that seem to go nowhere lol. Should I just untangle and dissect this server to figure it out? I’m kind of afraid of overstepping my position, but literally no one seems to know even what we’re doing over here except my silent coworker and the guy who built the server, who got promoted and isn’t in our building anymore (i’m basically replacing him). So i’m completely feeling around in the dark! Please help lol and thanks in advance

Synology External Storage: Synology DS418 - Power button turns blue for 4 to 5 seconds then off

Trying to troubleshoot my DS418, I have seen that most peoples issue with their Synology NAS is the blue blinking light, my issue is that when I try to turn on, the blue light only stays on between 4 to 5 seconds , then the light goes back off. The device never actually turns on, no fans turning, no sound or beeps. I have tried removing all the drives, and different working power supplies, still the same result. Any help will be appreciated. I have also replaced the CR2032 battery.

Drobo FS DRDS2-A: Drobo FS wont initialize

recently acquired from ebay - Have WB 1TB drives in each bay. After installing the dashboard and validing software is at the current version. Turned on drobo lights came on but after the self test the 1st bay indicator light came on solid red. Swapped out drives in bays same issue on all drives. I can send alert emails back and forth checkd firewalls and antivirus on laptop and on my asus router that it is attached to. checked my routers config and settings all looks good and current with the most recent firmware. I am now back to the drobo failure. I am looking for an understanding of steps to repair the unit.

Western Digital My Book Live: Can I replace Ethernet PCB on this External HD?

I have a Western Digital MyBook external hard drive that recently quit connecting. This is a NAS device, so direct connection to the hard drive does not work, however, the HD itself is still working and files are intact. The problem is that the Western Digital drives are encrypted, so the only way I can see to recover my data from the hard drive is to find a new PCB with the same numbers and connect it to the hard drive so it can connect to the network and transfer the files.

My question: is this the only approach? Or does someone have another suggestion.

This particular PCB number has been impossible for me to find online, so I am hoping someone has a workaround or resource.

I found a thread that describes using an ExtFS driver to mount the SATA drive directly to the computer - when I try this the drive does show up and I can view and access the folders and files, but the drive dismounts intermittently and file transfer speeds are EXTREMELY slow.

Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

D-Link DNS-323: Are replacement parts available?

My DNS-323 just died and won't power up. If I press and hold the power button, the two small drive lights both just flash dimly.

I'm assuming that the circuit board has simply died and was hoping that I could find a replacement part so I can fix it myself.

If not, can someone tell me if I can simply remove the drives and mount them in a standard desktop tower to retrieve the files on them. Are they stored in standard Windows format?

Hi Synology DS 1815+ will not power on and it is out of warranty.

I have seen online that a soldering a transistor and/or failing that replacing the psu would fix it.

Can anyone share a guide on steps to soldering the transistor as well as replacing the psu, and details where a compatible transistor and psu can be purchased?

Hi, I got a dns-323 from a friend, but he lost the power supply. I got one from a Lacie disk that gives out both 12v & 5v but i´m unsure if the pinout will match! does the original power supply tell the pinout?

Western Digital My Book Live: accessing the HD in MyBook Live

I had this MyBook for a few years, backing up to it my photos, music. Now, looks like it is dead. I extracted the hard drive from the MyBook enclosure and trying to connect to my PC (running Windows 10) using one of those "USB To SATA/IDE Hard Drive adapters." The drive shows up in the file manager fine, but if I click on it , it will show "G:\ Is Not Accessible. Invalid parameter". Any ideas, recommendations on how to recover/extract files? I really need those files...

Synology External Storage: Ethernet repair ideas for an old DS213j?

The 1GB ethernet port quit working after a close lightning strike. The unit still operates using the ethernet port at the 100 Mbps rate, though. Everything else in the DS213j seems fine, other than that ethernet port. Any ideas on what might have died and, more importantly, could I find and fix whatever stopped working? Trying to use the NAS at 10% of its previous connection speed is an exercise in frustration! Thanks.

Synology External Storage: Need component detail and circuit diagram for missing reset button

As per image - in a previous heavy handed RESET with an overlong paperclip, i have managed to break the reset switch from the motherboard.

I need some details of a suitable component and then the wiring / orientation for the four pins that will need soldering.

Alternatively, if someone knows how to temporarily short these four pins out then that would also be helpful, eg clockwise from top left 1 - 4, do I need to be jumping 1 to 3 or 3 to 4 or whatever.

Apple Xserve 2009: Xserve won't show anything on screen, only PSU fans on

Hey everyone,

Grabbed a 2009 Xserve to tinker with, it won’t show anything on screen, the CPU doesn’t get warm, the PSU fans are the only fans that are on.

All the LEDs on the edge of the second expansion slot are green, the CPUA MEM LED is lit up green, the System State is reported as S0 by a green LED, and the PLT_RST is orange. The orange status LED blinks, then off, then more blinking

I can answer any questions needed, I’ve already reseated the CPU and RAM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dell PowerEdge R710: Can I use a 150W+ GPU on a 25W PCIe slot + the 4/6pin PCIe PSU cable?

I have a PCIe slot on my motherboard with a 25W power limit and I want to add either an RX 570 4GB (~150W) or a Radeon HD 7950 3GB 3GB (~200W), I’m not yet sure which one, but most likely the RX 570. I won’t be switching my motherboard or PC due to costs so that’s not an option (please don’t suggest this). I want to connect the GPU to the 25W PCIe slot and use the 4/6pin (or whatever) PCIe connector from the PSU. Would the 4/6pin cable provide the extra 50W needed that the PCIe slot isn’t giving and allow it to boot and function normally? Or would the GPU be expecting 75W from the PCIe slot and not work even if the 4/6pin cable is providing enough power to cover the rest of the GPU’s TDP?
