iBook G3 12": Replace the Logic Board after power cable is stuck in port?

I'm trying to repair my neighbor's 2001 iBook. The end of the power supply connector has been stuck in the laptop for almost 9 years! I read the iFixit manual on how to take-apart the lower case to access to power supply port. I was able to pry out the connector out of the port with tweezers and electrician's dental picks. I separated the port from the logic board by accident. Do I have to replace the entire logic board or the power supply section of the logic board?

iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: DC In Board Defective - charge symbol flickers?

My wife's iBook problem began with the screen shutting off while plugged in to the AC adapter. Tried different adapters and isolated the battery as dead and not holding charge. New battery works fine but now I notice what may have helped kill the first battery. When different AC adapters are plugged in to verify it's not the adapter, we sometimes see the charging/battery symbol randomly flicker from one to the other and the screen seems to very slightly dim in synch. with the symbol change. If I gently move the AC male adapter while plugged into the female plug in the iBook I can make the flickering stop. Since this occurs with any AC adapter I've tried I believe my next step would be to replace the DC-in board. Does this make sense as the next step or have I missed something I should test first? Thank you/Curtis

iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Booted once, but now only black screen

I was cleaning out my old Mac stuff and came across an 12-inch iBook G4/1.33 in a drawer, which I'd put away and obviously forgotten about. Have been trying to revive it, but no luck so far.

I plugged it in, probably for the first time in at least a couple years, and it booted right up. I got to the startup screen and after about a minute I got the flashing question mark. I thought, Great, it works, so I plugged in an external FW drive that I often use to install Leopard, and hit Option, but the drive wasn't recognized. I rebooted using the key combo Power-Command-Control and held Option right away, but from that time onward all I get is a black screen on reboot. I've tried to reset the SMC (removed battery and AC, held Power for ten seconds, then put in battery and AC), but nothing's changed. I also checked the RAM and there was no second bank installed. I installed a working 512MB bank, but still no change. I also put in a new battery I have, but no go.

Any ideas?

Odd that it booted once, right away after years, but that it doesn't boot any more. Or rather, it boots, I hear the chimes and the HD and DVD starting up, but nothing.

The HD or the DVD make some noise, and there seems to be 2 beeps on startup, though it's hard to tell. They're not the typical beeps right away at startup (e.g., 3 beeps for bad RAM), but about 5 seconds after the chimes there's one beep, and then after another 5 seconds another beep. Though they could be grinding sounds from the HD or DVD.

What steps would you suggest?

I have a couple HDs lying around that I could try to install. But if it's unlikely that this would solve it, I'd rather avoid the pretty tough job of replacing the HD, and maybe sell it off for parts.

Any help greatly appreciated.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Why my iBook won't power on from battery?

Hi all, am hoping you can help me with my dilemma here. I bought an iBook off of eBay a couple of years ago and battery doesn't hold charge. The adapter light turns from orange to green then back to orange erratically. Battery icon showed either 'X' or 0%. I replaced the DC inboard because the adapter pin got stuck in there. It works perfectly when plugged in (apart from erratic battery behaviour). I have just bought a new battery hoping it would solve my problem. But here's the thing:

1. When I plugged in the AC adapter, it turns orange the whole time it's stuck in but it doesn't charge the battery.

2. Battery stays at 29% and I got two lights on the battery indicator.

3. Coconut battery says I have 29% as well but it tells me that battery is not charging.

3. System Profiler also says battery is connected but doesn't show as charging.

4. I left the laptop on sleep and hoping it would charge overnight but nothing happened the next day. It is still 29%

5. I tried to turn laptop on without the AC adapter, but it won't turn on, not even a blink.

6. I have reset PRAM, NVRAM and PMU to no avail.

Are these signs of bad logic board? Thanks guys!

iBook G3 12": Guidance on troubleshooting a non booting iBook

I´ve been given a broken iBook - G3 12 inches - 900 Mhz.

Upon close inspection i found out that someone sent it to the floor when it was plugged and charging. There was a dent in the case and the DC plug was bent and its inner connections broken.

I managed to repair the broken DC plug, now the battery charges properly; also i replaced the HDD which was broken, and also dealt with re-seating the graphic chip by means of a hair-dryer session.

Having the computer returned to life i managed to reinstall the OS (10.3.9) while it was wide open, but upon closing the case and putting (hopefully) everything back in its place, it won´t boot.

I have reopened it and, voila, it boots, so i´m guessing there´s a short somewhere.

Reading the different answers around here i´ve seen that the inner metal cover protection might be the culprit, as it could short if not properly placed. I´ll try this, but i´d like some extra advice of what else should i look for, in your opinion.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Battery apparently charged, but will only run when plugged in. Why?

I think this is a battery problem, but as I don't have a spare battery, I can't really test it. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem or a solution.

My battery is (allegedly) charged. The light on the adapter glows green, the battery icon claims 100%, even coconutbattery says it's 100%, but when I unplug the adapter, the computer shuts off. It's as if there's no battery in at all.

I was having problems before, and I thought it was only the battery, so I bought a new one. It helped a little bit, but then I realized there were other problems. (DC-in board needed to be replaced, plus there was a crack in the bottom case that made for a very loose connection to the battery. Unless I pushed in the right spot, the computer wouldn't recognize it was there.)

I've replaced the bottom case and the dc-in board, so that leads me to believe the battery was just junk in the first place. Coconut battery claims I've only charged it five times, which sounds accurate.

Any ideas? Reset PMU? Try to find a spare battery and test it out?

Oh, other little side note, which probably has no significance: If I disconnect and reconnect the battery, the light will switch to amber for a few minutes, though the icon on the screen will still claim it's completely charged.

If I remove the battery the ac adapter light will stay green and computer works however if the adapter is slightly moved or very gently touched it will turn orange and the computer shuts down. When I pressed the button that tests the battery only one light out of 4 turns green but I can't tell if it's actually the battery since the ac adapter won't charge when the battery is in place. I got this refurbished and expect to replace the battery but I'm wondering if the ac adapter is also a problem or if there is something else I might need to replace.
