iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Why my monitor is showing vertical lines and freezing after the boot?

Hi, hope someone can help me with this.

I was using my iBook G4 yesterday and suddenly it started showing vertical grayish lines. I restarted a couple times after that and one time it came back as it should (no vertical lines) for a couple minutes and then the vertical lines came back up.

I tried to restart it again, unplug it form the outlet, take the battery out and put it back in (just to make sure I tried almost everything) but nothing different happened.

I use an external monitor as well, but it shows the same problems that are showing on my ibook. Sometimes shows the vertical lines and sometimes it's just plain blue or black.

After that I rebooted the computer a few more times and noticed that I could see the mouse arrow (pixelated and with the vertical lines above it) and even move it around for a couple minutes, but after that the computer just froze. It didn't go to sleep nor reacted to any of the keyboard buttons/mouse pad interactions.

I was reading some of the questions here in the forum today, but i couldn't find anything more specifically related to my problem. Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance. Eduardo.

iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Does a "shimm" help with the Airport card socket issue?

Hello!

I've come across a large quantity of G4 12" 1.33GHZ machines. Usually about 1 in 30 has the Airport card socket issue (which causes kernel panics and makes the machine unusable when wireless is on) but in this case it seems 1 in 6 or 7 are having the issue. I usually scrap these machines for parts, but since I'm encountering a lot of them, I'm recalling from years ago that someone mentioned a "shimm" fix that can help the issue.

I'm basically wondering if the "shimm fix" is a viable long-term solution, and if so, how is it done?

Thanks,

iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: Replacement of hard drive with larger capacity cause issues?

Hello! I need to replace the HD in my iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz 30GB HD. I'm looking at buying your IF107-069-1 (320 GB 5400 RPM Western Digital ATA Hard Drive). If I replace my HD with a larger capacity HD will I loose any functionality?

Also, is there a larger or faster RPM HD for sale for this model? The reason I ask is because I once tried to replace the HD in a G3 iMac with a non-approved HD and that iMac would no longer go to sleep.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Why do small plastic balls fall off the bottom of my laptop?

I have these little white balls that are coming off from micro cracks in the outer finish of my laptop - but why is it happening? Does anyone else have this problem? I've tried to seal the bottom with a safe sealant, but that wears off. And just some packing tape that I can remove has slowed the shedding down - but it always finds a way to continue. No other iBook we've had has done this.

iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: How do I make a new hard drive bootable?

I installed a new hard drive for my iBook G4 that I purchased from iFixIt. When I went to install the operating system (OS X 10.2), the computer wouldn't boot/install from the Install Disk. I ended up formatting and installing the OS via a FireWire from another iBook. Everything looked good, but I still get a folder with question mark when I boot up. I can see the new hard drive via FireWire with all of the files, so I need to make the native computer recognize it. Suggestions?

Once I have the 3GB section I plan to restore it with Ubuntu 6.10, I have tried the install function within the Ubuntu OS but I get stuck at step 5/6, it asks me where I want my mount points for "/" and "swap" to be but no matter what I select, I cannot progress to step 6/6.

If anyone has a solution within Ubuntu I will try those first, then partitioning outside of Ubuntu.

Hello, I would like to know if there is a solution to save my ibook following the mistake of a glass of milk...

The last events I noticed :

- I put half a glass of milk on the front of my ibook (keyboard mostly)

- I opened all my computer, clean the bit of milk that come inside (very less, I am lucky, on the bottom side, just on the right of the plug for the battery)

- I ordered for a new keyboard and replaced it

- Then my ibook has run well during two/three weeks, and now it's kernel panic at anytime, sometimes during booting, sometime ten minutes after running well

- I opened again my computer to check the milk, but nothing new, and after different supposition, I try to boot it opened, without shields : I didn't noticed any kernel panic this way

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Is my power supply going bad?

Recently, I've discovered that if I plug my power supply into the wall, the tip lights up for about 5 seconds, then slowly fades. When this happens, the iBook suddenly stops charging. Am I looking at a bad power adapter or a bad DC-input jack? I notice that I can here a faint hum from the power supply- but I'm not sure if that's the natural hum or a bad one.

*UPDATE #1*

Okay, so here's an update- I found out that the power supply I receive with the machine is a 45W adapter. Apple's online kb articles say the iBook is supposed to have a 65W adapter. However, I've been using this power adapter for nearly a month, and it's never been problematic until just yesterday. Does my iBook need a higher wattage adapter to function?

**UPDATE #2**

Thanks to the comments below, I learned that either a 45W or 65W adapter will work. Having nothing to lose, I cracked open my power supply. I've found that my iBook will in fact charge with the cover off the adapter. When I press everything together, I hear a faint hum, and it turns off. I'm pretty sure that something somewhere is shorting out by touching something else when it's all put together.

Does anyone have any clue as to what could be shorting out?
