joshlismore,
Sorry for my delay... busy week.
Unfortunately, I did not find any good pictures in my research that would clarify the right position of the cable. Maybe [http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/inside-the-new-macbook-airs-screen/8523|this link] will help? Picture #2 shows you the ribbon cable... Or [http://www.ebay.com/itm/APPLE-Macbook-Air-A1369-13-2010-2011-LCD-SCREEN-Back-Cover-FAST-SHIPPING-NH4-/161013724115?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257d2a73d3|this picture] here (Picture #3; click to enlarge)?
Adding to this issue, I found an [http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/119669/Why+is+the+backlight+not+working|earlier posting here on iFixit], addressing the same question (further down). Unfortunately, I do not own a MBA and have never fixed the screen in order to be able to give you a definite answer.
In general, the defective cable is not fixable. And, since it is really difficult to get (and if, then it seems to be really expensive), I would look out for a used LCD Back cover, like [http://www.ebay.com/itm/Macbook-Air-11-A1370-LED-backlight-strip-LCD-back-cover-case-display-housing-/181105895032?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2ac0a678|this one here].
