iTunes errors 50 and 1671 when restoring iPhone 5

본문:

Hand-me-down iPhone 5 was boot-looping, so I replaced the battery. Saw some splotchiness on one corner of the LCD, but everything else worked OK. Tried to restore, but something went wrong - I still saw the previous owner's lock screen and it still asked for a passcode. I went into DFU mode and the phone stopped 2/3 into the restore process - error 50 on the MBP. Windows machines (7 and 10) give me error 1671, never starting the restoring process at all. Not sure if error 50 is fatal, like error 53. iTunes has been updated. These attempts used the same home WiFi network. Win7 is on the MBP. Win10 is on a Dell. I've only tried one Lightning cable, and I think it's MFI-certified. The MBP is the only machine that will start the restoration process.

Phone's now waiting to connect to iTunes, but I think it got partly updated, since the iTunes logo color changed from red to white.

I'm suspecting water-damage, since the original battery seemed shorted out. The innards had no white crust, but I imagine there still can be liquid damage. When fully charged, the phone felt warm, and if I can find my IR thermometer, I would suspect the heat's coming from the logic board.

I'm going to prep the logic board for an ultrasonic cleaning. I've seen one video on removing shields with a soldering iron, but the technique featured a big blob of solder. I can't seem to find other videos that would offer a more "elegant" way to remove the shields with an iron. I'd actually like to resurrect and use this phone for very casual use, even though it may not be fit for reuse.

Ready to remove the logic board, but would love to know what else I can try before removing the shields from the logic board.
