My screen goes black after a few minutes.

My machine boots successfully but it makes a strange noise near the power button.  After a few minutes and screen goes black, as if asleep, but will not restore - no matter what buttons or strokes are done.  If restarted the screen returns/restarts as normal, until the few minutes pass.  Any help troubleshooting will be wonderful.
