How do I clean the printer head?

I had not used my TI-5130 printer for several years, and when I tried to use it recently, after installing a fresh ink roller, I could barely make out the numbers for all the ink-smudging around them.  My efforts to clean the numbers have been unsuccessful.  What can I do?
