The upgrade should only change the operating system, not your personal files such as your music, documents, photos, etcetera. HOWEVER, you should ALWAYS back up everything before a system upgradeupgrade, just in case. I'd recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your entire hard drive to an external hard drive and then confirm you can boot from that external hard drive. Then if something goes wrong, you have your whole system backed up in a working format.
