After the first 1-2 mins of logging in, it freezes immediately. The entire screen freezes as well as the mouse. When I try to shut it down or restart it, I am not able to hit the return button or use the pad. I just received it as a gift yesterday and the giver does not have a receipt.

Cindy - Sounds like your system was used. Is that correct? If so your system is looking for a network resource to log into. If you let it run for a a while it should allow you access at which point you should be able correct the problem. Let us know and we can review what to do next.
If you believe you have a new system, your the system has a date code as part of its serial number so you still should be able to bring it into an Apple Store for them to fix the problem (if you have a hardware issue).
I would recommend getting an extended Apple Care service plan if the warranty period is better than 1/2 over just for peace of mind.
