Where is the Airport Antenna?

Hi !

I've got the "No Airport Card installed" syndrome ...

I did my own researches and decided to open the MBP and check the wires : no improvements !

Then I changed the airport card following a guide on this website : no improvements !

So I'm wondering if the failure comes from the antenna ...

I've given a close look to the LCD dismantle and this antenna seems to be in the bottom of the screen, and there might be no use to open completely the screen (heater gun, etc.)

Is that correct ? Am I in the right way to solve my problem ?

Thanks

Did you reset your PRAM and SMC after disconnected and reconnected everything? If not give that a try. Also check and see if you have any other USB devices (iSight, ports, etc...) not working, the Airport is piggy backed into the USB.

"No Airport Card Installed' error implies the system can't see the Airport hardware not an antenna issue. I suspect you have a bad airport card (depending on the source where you got the replacement) or the ribbon cable is bad are the likely suspects.

Can you explain what happened before you had this problem. Did you drop or get your system wet?

I suspected the airport card first so I bought another card on Ebay ... (and I can't test it on another laptop) I checked thoroughly the black flat cable, it seemed OK ... and gave a close look to the 3 small cable of the antenna, seemed OK too ... And for information, I had a "little" bike accident which may have caused this error ;o)

Ouch! So the question is was the system in a padded case or did it get dented some where? It could be the bounce damaged the ribbon or the main logic board connector. Any visible signs of damage anywhere?

The mac was well protected but still, there is small dent on the front bottom right corner ... So you think the ribbon or one of the connector is responsible for this ? not the airport card ? or a "short circuit" on the antenna ? thx

You state bottom right so the display lid did not get dinged correct? Just the corner of the main case its self. If thats correct I don't see how the antenna its self or the cable could have been damaged. Does it look like the antenna cable was pinched or squeezed by the damage? The bottom cover its self is not dented at the airport causing it to short on the antenna connectors? Does it work without the cover?

At this point you'll need to try swapping out the ribbon cable, if you think the airport card is good. It would be helpful having a second good system to test out the parts to isolate this down.

A sudden shock can displace a SMT component/connector or cause damage that is hard to see.
