hard drive formatting issue

I am trying to upgrade the hard drive in my 2006 macbook. I bought a 500gb Western Digital Black hard drive. Physically installing it was simple but when I go to format I get some issues. First thing I notice is that it reads the drive capacity at 3.6TB. I have seen it be a little off before but not 7x larger. When I go to partition it I do .4TB (400GB correct?) and I get an input/output error. I have had the drive replaced under warranty and am still getting the same issue, I have replaced hard drives in the past without issues and have never had back to back bad drives. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions?

Did you check your systems firmware? Apple TN on EFI & SMC updates.

Did you set the SATA jumper to SATA-II Vs SATA-III? Check your drive SATA's speed

I would try using an external Firewire or USB (slower) enclosure to house your new HD and try formatting it that way if it works you know your system has issues with this drive. Once your sure it's working use the external case to copy over your data and hold your old drive as a backup you never know when it will come in handy (one good use is when your internal HD needs defragmenting or checking out).

Thanks for the answer. First off the hard drive in that laptop has been failing, most of the time it does not boot up. I also do not have an external enclosure to format the drive with. I tried formatting it in another Macbook from the same generation and had the same error. Is it possible this particular model of hard drives does not work with macbooks? From the user reviews I read a couple people said they used it on theirs.

Did you check your firmware & the HD jumper?

Right now I cannot get the laptop to boot with the old hard drive, so I cannot check the firmware on the computer, I know it is a model 1,1 macbook. As for the HD jumpers I am having trouble locating the information that will tell me which SATA it is. The model info for the drive is WD5000BPKT-00PK4T0. Thanks again for the help, this is the most trouble i have ever had swapping a hard drive.

There might be some bad blocks in your hard drive , that's why it causes formatting problems. I would suggest to use Stellar Partition Manager to resolve all these issues.

This tool is very reliable to format, create, delete, resize Mac partitions. Otherwise replacing hard drive would be one great idea to get rid of this problem.

I think machead03 mentioned it already in another thread last days - you need to make sure your hard drive can be jumpered to use SATA-II mode to make use of it in those MacBooks.
