Pram part of the battery can go bad

So the Pram part of the battery can go bad even if the main battery itself is still working and keeps a good charge?

Are you having a problem with your system holding it's time?

Indeed I am. And I use some very sensitive, very old, very brittle cnc machine diagnostic software on it which is VERY time sensitive :D

In your system you have either a closed chip or the capacitor powered. In either case you first need to look at your power system to make sure your system is able to recharge the chip. Is your battery still good? Do you leave your system plugged in (because the batt is no longer good) and if so is the AC power removed when your system is turned off?

If you have an Internet connection you could connect your system to a time server to reset the clock when you restart your system as your first option. Otherwise, you'll need to either replace chip or capacitor or the logic board depending on your rev of your system.

Over the years Apple has used different methods to hold time. The first and one of the more popular methods is a clock chip that was powered by a exposed Lithium button battery that you could easily replaced. Later, Apple went to a closed clock chip with an internal battery for a short time and then went to a capacitor powered clock chip. These last two types of clock chips depended on the AC/DC power of the system to recharge.
