HDD and SSD Dual Drives

Is it possible to use my factory installed HDD and a Intel 330 SSD with my iMac? I want to do a sort of fusion drive combo like the new iMacs where the more commonly used programs and operating system is on the SSD and the heavier files are on the HDD?

MY IMAC IS A MID 2011 WITH 16GB OF RAM RUNNING MOUNTAIN LION AND WINDOWS 8 ON BOOT CAMP. THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE EVERYONE!

Here's a good writeup on what a Fusion Drive is ArsTechnica writeup

What isn't stated is if you have Mountain Lion you can create a Fusion Drive your self. Here's a guide on what you need to do MacWorld writeup

Some caution here: If either drive fails you can have a big mess as files are spanned across the two drives, so it's very important to have a good backup strategy and keep it current.

Using the SSD as a boot drive with a set of static files (which you likewise have to have a backup of) is also a good way, but, unlike a Fusion Drive you need to manually manage the files.

It is possible, but it is not recommended as this will slow down the speed. Normally you use 2 similar drives to make it faster (RAID).

Just google DIY Fusion Drive, and there are complete instructions on how to do it.

I'm running a mid-2009 MacBook Pro with a SSD and HDD combo. I have my OS and all applications on the SSD, and files (music, documents, virtual machines, etc.) on the HDD. I haven't tried bootcamp with this setup as I'm perfectly happy using Parallels for my virtual machines (I have Windows 8, 7, XP, and some Linux distros).

My laptop is faster now than the day I got it. The SSD seemed to increase the one big bottleneck that was holding back my system speed. So, if you're up for doing the procedure then definitely go for it!

Is this a 21.5" model? If so the internal SSD ( which would be placed under the Optical Drive will NOT be compatible with the original main logic board that it came with. It would need a different logic board, cabling, and housing and the SSD would have to be from Apple. Swapping the HDD will cause issues as the sensors are now built into the Apple HDD parts.

Hope this help!

Please review this Dual HD kit for EMC 2428. In this case you are using a SSD Vs an HD. The logic board on this model supports a second drive. Older models you would need to swap-out your optical drive for a second drive carrier.
