MBP Unibody too slow. How to replace the PRAM Battery?

Hi,

RAM is emptied incorrectly and my MBP 13" Unibody Mid 2009 is too slow.

Is the PRAM Battery remplacement the solution of my problem ?

How do I change the PRAM battery ?

And is it possible to order a new one from you?

Tried to look for this question on the site, but can not seem to find it.....

Thank you.

Best Regards

The PRAM battery is most likely not the cause for the slowness of your MacBook Pro. It is best to first consider the amount of ram, hard drive space available, and things you have running while it is on. THe first thing I would do is go to Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info to see how much ram you have as well as how much HD space you have left. You will want to have >80 GB free n your hard drive for maximum performance. Another thing that can be done is a ram upgrade. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20W...

8 GB can make a big difference when we are talking about the number of apps and processes you can run as well as overall system speed. Your laptop most likely has 2-4 GB right now, so this upgrade would do a lot. The PRAM batter is just there to keep the time and sometimes cache of your memory. It would not be the issue here. What do you mean when you say the ram was emptied incorrectly?

Hope this Helps

Hello Owen

Thank for your answer, i will check about the place on the HD and see if an upgrade of RAM is necessary on my friend's MacBook Pro.

Sorry i said that it's my laptop, but it's the laptop of my friend :)

My friend thinks that the function of PRAM battery is to clear regularly the RAM.

If the PRAM battery is out of service, RAM will not be cleared and the MacBook Pro slows down.

So he would like to change for him the PRAM battery to check if this will solve my problem.

I don't know where the PRAM battery is located exactly in the MBP .

Do you think the PRAM battery remplacement is the solution ?

Does somebody have a photography to show me where is located this PRAM battery ?

Where can i buy it ?

Well, the ironic thing is is that all the unibody MacBook Pros, including your friends, never had a PRAM battery. Instead, they have a capacitor on board that is charged while the computer is on or charging and then supplies power while off to keep time and cache. This is because higher capacity and longer charge holding capacitors can now be made so that they will function more efficiently than a battery and not need to be replaced. Like I said, the PRAM battery wont be an issue here. Unless the capacitor is damaged, which would be hard to replace and could risk damaging the whole logic board, a $600 part. I am almost 100% sure there are other contributing factors here, non of which are the PRAM capacitor. The MacBook Pro also uses the regular battery for part of this function however, so if is battery is having issues, he may need a new one.

Some wikipedia info about PRAM or CMOS battery: It is a backup battery used by the logic board/motherboard to run the clock circuit and retain the configuration memory while the computer is turned off.

As said above, a failing PRAM battery would not slow down your computer, but your clock would be incorrect and set to a date far back in history (1 jan 1970) every time you start it up.

And no, the PRAM battery has nothing to do with RAM.

Hope this info helps a little...
