Can I put a larger hard drive in?

Ok, so I did a little research a while ago and thought that I could upgrade to a 240GB hard drive using a Toshiba MK2431GAH drive (I had no money to buy it at the time). However now that I've got some spare cash to buy the drive, I've been doing some more research, and now I'm not so sure.

Some places seem to think that if the drive will fit in the iPod then it should work but other sites they're saying that the HDD will only work properly in an 5th Gen iPod video (60GB or 80GB) or, on one site it says in the "7th gen iPod classic."

So this last piece of information has raised the question - "What generation is my iPod?"

I think its 6th gen but not 100% sure. Does this mean it wont work? I'm not even sure what iPod it is now. I went through ifixit's "ID your iPod" and the result was - 160GB "thick" iPod Classic, but from everything else I read online

I have the "thin" late 2009 model.

Please help me. My iPod is full and I don't want to have to be constantly changing what music is on it. I don't want to rush out and buy a HDD that isn't compatible either.

anelson2, what number is engraved on the back cover of your iPod?

Model: A1238

Intro Date: September 5, 2007 Disc Date: September 9, 2008

Order No: MB029LL/A* Model No: A1238 (EMC 2173)

Subfamily: iPod classic Model ID: None

Std RAM: 64 MB* Std VRAM: N/A

Std Storage: 80 GB, 160 GB Std Optical: N/A

"I don't think there is an official "7th generation" for the Classic, maybe a "late 2009 edition" when Apple re-introduced a 160GB model. As for the differences, the newer 160GB model is thinner (and more reliable) since it uses a single-platter hard disk rather than a double. The only other difference I can think of is Genius support on the newer model, but not the older one."

Just an update incase someone else finds this looking for answers.

I also found this which is an interesting read but I'm still not sure if it answers my question. Anyway I did find it useful. Buried within that was also this which looks promising.

There's still a few things I'm not sure about and they are:

I believe that the available 240GB HDD's are duel platter and the one currently in my iPod is single platter. Does this matter when upgrading?

And… this might be minor but as I don't know much about these things - is there a difference between MK2431GAH and MK2431GAL?

Please try not to get too technical as I'm not even sure what it is I'm asking.

Thanks for all your help so far oldturkey03.

Hey Nelson. Did you ever upgrade your hard drive? Any luck with the 240gb drive?

Something like the Toshiba MKxx31GAL series should work without difficulty. They do go up to 240 GB. The only other thing I suggest is that you replace the hard drive cable as well.

Is there a difference between that and the MK2431GAH

anelson, the GAH are the higher capacity drives. The difference are the physical size (GAH is thicker), as well as double the number of platters, as well as double the number of data heads.
