I have a DVD stuck in the drive, the computer does not register that there is anything in the drive and the drive does nothing it makes no noise that I can hear. I have tried all of the fixes recommended by Apple to no avail, holding the track pad button down while rebooting etc. It appeared to load normally and simply did not register the DVD's existence.

Your Optical Drive could be shot - you can use the double sticky tape trick or dismantle the machine remove the drive, then remove the top from the drive.
