I have an iBook G4, PowerBook 6,7 with the following stats:
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.33 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
It is going on 5 years old and needs a new battery and keyboard. Given its age and software, would it be worth fixing in the long haul or should I consider a new, comparable replacement.

eBay is your best friend for iBooks G4 used working parts. For + - $50 you can buy a keyboard and a battery for your 1.33 iBook. If you have the 12" 1.33, well that was the last model before the first MacBook so it runs very well under Leopard if adequately configured (1.5GB ram and 7200 rpm HD). You still can sell this computer for $350 if well configured and in good condition and buy a used MacBook for $500 (1.83Ghz) to $600 Core2Duo) so it's up to you to take a decision probably based on the fact that you want/need newer technology or not.

I'm still rocking the exact same model as my primary machine. :)
Granted, I have 1.25GB RAM and a 7200RPM harddrive, but that's just because I had them lying around. Generally, the Low End Mac Swap group has really good prices on iBook stuff. I sold a keyboard there for $10. Memory tends to go for $20ish.
It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade, but neither is your iBook dead. I think it's worth putting a little money into. The potentially pricey part will be the battery- I'm not sure how much that would go for.
And what happened to your keyboard? Did it get liquid damaged? If that's the case, you may want to check the board for any other damage before you put more cash into it.

Look at cost of repair vs. replacement.
Most cases its better to replace it with a white MacBook considering its compareable but if you want a firewire you have to get the MacBook Pro 13'' as it has FW 800 not 400 but they sell adaptors to get FW 400 on a FW 800.

Just stumbled on this, so I'm late to the party. I have an iBook 14" G4 1GHz bought at the start of 2004 that's still working wonderfully. I've replaced three batteries (the weakest part of the computer IMO), replaced a dead hard drive a couple of years ago (to be expected, in a laptop especially), and the E key label is worn off. But it just keeps ticking away, has hardly been off in all these years.
But I'm not sure I would make any more major investments in it only because the PPC processor is now an orphan. The OS can't be upgraded past Leopard, other Apple software will no longer be available (of course they have a vested interest in "encouraging" you to buy a new Mac!), and many software publishers are starting to create Intel-only upgrades, which might leave you with unpatched vulnerabilities. If your iBook is just a secondary computer, then you might want to make small repairs to keep it running. But if this is your primary box, then you are going to fall farther and farther behind the rest of the Mac ecosystem; and, as another poster suggested, you might consider getting a new MacBook (or MBP if you can afford it).
