This is a problem with your home button controller. It is a small flex cable underneath your home button. This spring loaded button makes contact with the home button on the circuit board and when you press the home button, it closes the circuit indicating you pressed it. The spring getting stuck or worn out is very common. To fix this, follow the home button controller replacement guide found here: iPod Touch 4th Generation Home Button Ribbon Cable Replacement

Take your time, paying attention to any cautions in the instructions. If pictures are to difficult to follow along with, search "iPod touch 4 home button controller replacement" on YouTube. There should be more than sufficient videos to get you through the repair process, which is fairly easy. Make sure you read through the instructions before you begin any repairs, ensuring you have all parts and tools necessary to successfully accomplish the job.

A couple of things to watch for specifically, don't pull the screen out completely because the cable for the LCD will still be attached. When removing the metal mid plate, place your spudger or iPod opening tool underneath the bottom left corner to pry it away from the speaker. There is glue holding these two together and you will rip the speaker wires if they don't get detached first. Also, place the screws in a pattern so they match where they were removed from. This way they go back where they came from. This is not completely necessary, but it will hold your mid plate down tight when reassembling so your screen will sit flush again.

Best of luck!

Austin
