Why is my iMac randomly going to sleep?

My iMac began randomly going to sleep a month ago. I reset the SMC multiple times. It stopped doing it for 2 1/2 weeks. Then it went another week without doing it. Now it's done it 10 times in the last 2 hours. Any ideas why? it does it while I use it and I have to use the power button to wake it up.

I believed it is the latest upgrade from apple because i have two partitions one i use and the other is backup, when the problem started I switched partitions and the problem went away

Found the problem! i placed a jumper on my sata HD drive selection between pin 1&2, restarted and abracadabra, it worked for me, my mac was going to sleep every three minutes now, no more problems

I gave up 3 days after posting this and just bought a mac mini with a lcd monitor. Lesson learned for me to not buy an all-in-one computer again.

What happens when you disconnect your network connection (wired and/or wireless)? You appear to have a lot of network events in your log snippet.

Have you made sure your running the latest OS & App updates? Have you checked for Viruses or other nasties taking over your system?

I haven't tried that. Is it common for the internet connection to go off once the iMac goes to sleep? I have Wake for Network Access checked in the energy settings.

I haven't ran any virus software to check. I'm running 10.7.5

So far no blackouts since I turned down my brightness 5-6 notches. I notice the temperature is also 10 degrees less with everything. I don't think it would be an overheating issue though.

It now just went black after being on for an hour. This I used control + shift + command to wake it instead of the power button. Much easier.

I have done some research on this topic and have found that those LCD screens are prone to dying. It is NOT a software issue, it is the LED backlight and LCD Screen itself that die. It fades to black as the LED backlight dies out, keeps your computer still active and will allow your monitor to come back after sleep/shutdown.

For a workaround you can press: Shift-Control-Eject key which will switch from the NVidia drivers to the integrated drivers.

Also some people have found that it is purely a graphical issue: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-200...

Another workaround would be to attach an external monitor and see if you continue to get the black screen on it. If you do, 100% its the graphics card, if not, most likely your LCD is close to death.

Hi,

I believe this happened to me before. I see that you have reset your SMC, have you tried resetting your PRAM?

Shut down the computer.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

I reset the PRAM and it didn't work either. I really wish I could figure this out. It seems to be software related some how because it goes black (sleep) but my music still plays and everything else. It's also weird how it was fine for 2 1/2 weeks and then came back again. I have reduced my brightness down 6 notches and it hasn't gone black yet, but I would still like to figure out the problem.

I found that my vent was caked with dust. As soon as I cleaned it, this problem stopped.

I have a 27" iMac with a Radeon 5750 card. The combination mentioned above (Ctrl-Shift-Eject) seemed to do nothing, but when I pressed just Ctrl-Shift immediately afterwards, the screen came back for a few seconds. Experimenting, I tried the sequence again but pressed Ctrl-Shift twice. Now the screen is staying on. I hope this helps someone.

UPDATE: That worked for a while, then the problem came back.

I have the same problem with the screen going black and requiring that I log back in and it happens in the middle of my actually working or talking with someone on skype or just pausing for a minute or two between any actions at all. There doesn't seem to be any one thing that triggers it other than the system having a mind of its own to decide when it wants to go to sleep... regardless of what I might be in the middle of. Doing searches on google about the problem brings up hundreds, maybe thousands of other users asking the same question and I've not yet found anyone who's truly figured out the issue. Apple clearly has a problem they need to address for their customers.
