problem for booting, then blown part on logic board

Hi guys,

Two weeks ago, I bought a second hand MBP 17" mid 2009 model A1297 with 3.06ghz C2duo and 8gb RAM.

My mac refused to boot yesterday. I try several times but nothing. Then I rebooted the SMC and finally the computer started to work but with a weird smell of chemical smoke.

The computer seemed to work but i shut it off because I was scared by this smell.

I opened it and I found a blown element on the logic board:

Now, I don't want to use it anymore without indentify this element and changing it.

What kind of problem is it? overvoltage?

Do you think that a complete logic board replacement would it be necessary?

Thanks for reading this article and sorry for my bad english.

Best regards.

Igor

Thank you very much OldTurkey, I zoomed the image, this is the number below the component: http://hpics.li/f2add64 it is Q4260. How can we be sure that Q4260 matches with NDS9407?

Many thanks.

Igor

Sorry for the downvote, I didn' knewhow it works, I thought I put it on +1. Now I put +1

It happens, no big deal. I just wondered if I missed something:-)

Thanks for your great help Old Turkey, it's a huge step for me!

You are welcome, best of luck to you.

Igor, just checked the schematic and it looks like the component Q4260 is a NDS9407 60V P-Channel PowerTrench MOSFET. Just verify that it does say Q4260 below the burned component:-) Yes, it does look like to much current. This could because the MOSFET itself was failing. The part is available right here Check the datasheet on here for application of the MOSFET etc. Hope this helps, good luck

Igor, thank you for accepting my answer. I cross-referenced your Q4260 with the motherboard schematic and it shows the NDS9470. Rest is just a matter of doing a Google search with that.

after changing the MOSFET NDS9407, the same problem: smoking macbook...what can I do?

Thank you for any information or advise. maybe you have an adress of a good repair atelier...

Depends on where you are and I bet a lot of shops don't do board level repair. Best bet would be to contact mayer http://www.ifixit.com/User/13051/mayer or Dan http://www.ifixit.com/User/408812/Dan for more information about that.

thanks Old Turkey,

In France nobody is able to repair this, i've tried a shop with an arab "specialist of all Macs" DESTOCKAZ in Paris 17, and he did nothing for 40 euros, stole me connector shields from my logic board....

Finally I sent it to Hong-Kong, hope it's gonna be fixed soon.

thanks Old Turkey, bye.

igor, sorry to hear that. I do hope you'll get it fixed and let us know when you get it back.
