So then what about a Hybrid SSD?

As seen here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B99J...

In fact I like hybrid HD's as your getting the benefits of both solid state storages speed with a traditional disks storage. Besides I don't need a second I/O connection to gain it's benefits. While they are not as fast as a straight SSD, they make up for it with their sheer size of storage. You still have the SATA I/O issue here SATA I (system) running a SATA III (Hybrid/HD/SSD device). So you still need to make sure the device is able to run off of the SATA I interface your system has (in this case). As your not the poster of the original Question your system may be SATA II or if your lucky SATA III. I would strongly recommend you check-out EveryMac looking up what your system is. If you have a SATA II interface you may need to treat it like a SATA I as there is also an issue with some SSD/HD's causing your system to overheat. This is caused by heavy I/O as the system has to do a lot of retry's in the read/write of the HD causing the CPU to work doubly hard.

It may not work well, The SSD your using here is a SATA III drive your machines I/O is SATA I. Though vendors claim backward compatibility, there have been people here asking questions about stalling and freezing who have put "new" drives in "old" machines. At any rate you will not get the transfer speed reported with this drive as your computer can't work that fast.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Make sure you have the latest EFI firmware on your system firmware updates

A Sata 1 bus supports 1.5 Gpbs, an ssd is a great upgrade. The hard drives can't even come close to pushing the limit of the interface speed. Look at some of the side by side comparisons on youtube in older macs.

Byron, the issue here is will it play well in the system. Thats the rub. This systems I/O is SATA I and most of these newer SSD's don't play well with the older SATA I/II systems (1.5/3.0 Gb/s) as they are SATA III (6 Gb/s).

That's simply not true. Go to youtube and pull up any number of videos on older machines with ssd upgrades on sata1.

I didn't say it wouldn't work, I said many don't play well. The issue is the way the I/O is sensed with the auto discovery versions, others have a jumper and others are just rated at the slower SATA I spec. As to performance: Yes! they are very speedy even with the SATA I interface!
