iMac G5 20" Model A1145 will not boot after reinstall.

My hard drive recently went down with the 'click of death'

I have replaced it. The original one was a WD2500JS Caviar SE.

I have replaced it with a WD5000AVDS Green. Which shows up fine in Disc Utility. I did not use any jumpers.

I can see the hard disc booting from the system disc (10.4.2 ones which came with the machine) and repair/make/reformat the drive. Smart status of the drive is fine in Disc utility.

When I boot to the hard disc it chimes, screen comes on hangs at the apple logo without the spinning gear. fans come up. nothing else happens.

When I press ALT the hard drive is blessed with the OSX folder. As well as the system disc and AHT showing up.

Safe boot will not work. I have taken the RAM out the slot did not make any difference.

AHT Quick passes fine. Extended test comes up with:

2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0 - Master. Mass Storage Error.

Getting really ticked off with this machine now. Thanks for any help in advance it is much appreciated.

Jason - Your iMac has an older SATA I 1.5 Gb/s interface, yet the drive your putting in has a SATA II 3 Gb/s interface which is too fast for your system without setting a jumper. Review this Western Digital doc on setting the OPT1 jumper. That should fix things here - Good Luck

Thanks :) Dan - OTP1 Jumper setting is 5/6 pins covered. second pair of pins from the left. I will give it a whirl and then get back to you after a fresh install and let you know if it works. - Thanks again.

I added a jumper ask mentioned. I used the original install disks to install OSX 10.4.2. I walked away as it takes hours. Rebooted the machine. Hangs on the apple. Disk Utility now says the S.M.A.R.T. Failed on disk. Not happy as it was a fresh out the bag new drive. grrrrr. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Did you re-partition the drive and format? If you did, sounds like you have a bum drive - Sorry ;-{

Confirmed the drive was failing. S.M.A.R.T. was failing on the drive. Therefore not mounting/ booting correctly. Got a new drive which works perfectly no need for Jumpers or anything.

Thanks for your help Dan! :)
