Optical Drive Replacement problem with older model drive

My optical drive went out, and I have a dead older white xbox 360 that had the red ring of death, but a good drive.

I tried to put the older drive in the newer xbox, and it spins up, but won't boot any games.

Is there a firmware update, serial number problem, or any other reason why it wouldn't work?

Has anyone else ever tried this?

Fred Leonard ,a new drive would require that the firmware be "flashed" before the drive will work. Hang on to all of your old parts and do not discard anything. Take a look on here and check the forum at this site. there is lots of information about it out there. You can not simply swamp the drive. Hope this helps, good luck.

Each drive is cryptographically paired to the main logic board. It will not read any games if they are simply swapped. You have to reflash the drive firmware. Depending on the model you have, it may not be possible at all. Also you must not swap drives from different models. It leaves bad security log entries which Microsoft can ban your console from Xbox live based on this.

I have a easier solution. Buy an xbox DVD drive of the exact same model, then open it, discard the drive controller board and install your original one into it. Should work without any hacking.
