Blu-Ray player wont read Blue-Ray disks

ok so far this is a new one to me. for a while now my PS3 hasnt been letting me play the games. every time i put one in it was like it was trying to read the disk and would even seem to shift it to a better position. so i bought the 54 bit set to get inside and clean it out. and i did find a penny and a button (little 2 year old brother put those in when i wasn't around) and cleaned out a lot of dust. but that didnt seem to solve the problem. so i (on a whim) put in a DvD to see what would happen. and wouldn't you know it, it runs perfectly. so i jump up and try a Blu-Ray movie and the same thing happened as with the games. so the only conclusion i can come to is that the Blu-Ray Disk Drive is no longer able to read Blu-Ray based disks. Does any one have any thoughts what-so-ever. because this is something ive never seen before.

shigaraja, either your Blu-Ray laser is dirty, and you could try to clean the lens with isopropyl alcohol, or your laser has failed. You could try to replace either the laser or the optical drive.

ok. so could you explain to me why the dvd worked?

sure I can. It uses different lasers. Remember that the wavelength for CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray are all different. Wavelength of laser to create CD: 780nm

Pit length on CD: 0.85microns

Wavelength of laser to create DVD: 650nm (Red laser)

Pit length on DVD: 0.4microns

Wavelength of laser to create Blu-Ray Disc: 405nm (Blue Violet laser)

So you actually have different lasers, pots and circuitry in your optical drive. There is of course more to it, but the common reason for this error is a failure in the Blu-Ray circuitry.

ok thank you i thought that it all ran off of the blu-ray laser. i was kinda going with a theory of mine that a smaller wavelength could still be used to read the pit length of the DvDs. sorta like how a smaller needle can still fit through a bigger hole.

yup, different diodes altogether. there are some pots on the drive which are adjustable, but only if you have a multimeter and the proper values. Not a thing to do if you do not have those. Use this guide to replace your PlayStation 3's Blu-ray disc drive. Replacing a defective Blu-ray drive with a replacement requires swapping the Blu-ray drive board from the old drive onto the replacement. Hope this helps, good luck.
