Color on LCD fades to white after 10 seconds

The color on my Samsung LN37A550P3FXZA LCD tv fades after 10 seconds. It's a 5 yr old tv. I've opened it up and cleaned out dust, nothing has changed. Does anyone have any advice before I go buy another?

emily, which Samsung is it? When you say fades to white, does that mean you have a bright screen just no picture?

Thanks Oldturkey :) It doesn't fade completely, there is still a picture but the color is faded out almost to b&w and the contrast goes as well, as if there is a veil over the screen. It is model number LN37A550P3FXZA.

Thank you!

I have the same problem but in a Vizio brand, can it be the same process for fixing? MIKE.

My 8 year old Samsung LCD TV picture fades in and out after a few minutes. It comes on ok, then it appears like someone adjusted the contrast - still colour, but kind of milky/misty. Then after a variable amount of time, it pops back to full colour. This repeats all the time it's on - sometimes it is in one state for as much as 10 minutes, and sometimes just a few seconds, there doesn't seem to be any consistency, although the amount of fade is always the same.

If anyone has an idea if this is a simple fix or time for a new TV (we don't watch a lot, so it might not get replaced if it's going to cost too much), please advise.

Cheers,

Bernie.

I'm having a similar issue. My TV is an Insignia. It is 6 years old. The picture was perfect and then today it got very cloudy white. I turned it off for a few hours and when I turned it back on it looked normal. After a minute it faded to cloudy white again. I can barely read the menu.

emily, this could be caused by a failing inverter, bad ccfl as well as bad capacitors on the main board. I would suggest to take a look at the mainboard and check the capacitors for any bulging, leaking etc. Remember that there was a big issues with Samsung having used sub par capacitors. Your TV is part of the group that was affected by this. Check this site.. Of course it is also possible that this is a bad white balance. Go into service mode and see what checksum you get on White balance. It should be 0x000. to access the service mode Turn the power off and set to stand-by mode

Press the remote buttons in this order; POWER OFF-MUTE-1-8-2-POWER ON to turn the set on.

The set turns on and enters service mode. This may take approximately 20 seconds.

Press the Power button to exit and store data in memory.

- If you fail to enter service mode, repeat steps 1 and 2 above.

There is also a way of resetting your set to factory default, I'll keep you posted. Hope this helps, good luck.

Update

To access it would be the following :"Access Service Mode

Using the remote

1 Turn the power off and set to stand-by mode

2 Press the remote buttons in this order; POWER OFF-MUTE-1-8-2-POWER ON to turn the set on.

3 The set turns on and enters service mode. This may take approximately 20 seconds.

4 Press the Power button to exit and store data in memory.

- If you fail to enter service mode, repeat steps 1 and 2 above.

5 Initial SERVICE MODE DISPLAY State

'''* How to enter the hidden factory mode.

a. into the factory mode

b. key input : 0 + 2 + 1 + 4 + exit

c. select option byte menu -> in menu -> out menu

(... hidden menu appear...)

hidden menu : Video/Scaler, Enhancement, SOUND, Dynamic Contrast, LNA+

- FBE3(image enhance IC) generate internal pattern'''

Under the option byte tab, you should find a factory reset, may be that will help. Just in case it is a firmware/software issue.

Wow, some good knowledge. Checksum on white balance was where it should be so ill open it up again tomorrow and have a look at the main board. We did have a part replaced within one yr of buying the dang thing so it's just a lemon of a tv. Is replacing the main board worth it/possible? Any idea how much it costs? Might just be time to call it quits but I'd love to try to resurrect it. You have been so helpful Old Turkey!

I bought a couple of boards for different sets from here and liked the service. That is not to say that there are not any cheaper places like this one, out there. In theory, you might fix this TV for about $150-$200 max. BTW your TV also has a hidden menu that you can try to access. Directions are posted as an update to my original answer Hope this helps, good luck.

a couple of years ago,I fixed the 'planned obsolescence' under-rated capacitors (10volt rated on a 12volt power supply - they just last long enough to run out the warranty/extended warranty, i.e.: 5+ years) that Samsung choose to put in these TV's, for a cost of $3.60 (capacitors are REALLY cheap!) and a half-hour labour taking off the back, removing the connectors and unscrewing the power supply board (which is smack in the middle of the workings of the TV, and the first thing you see when the back comes off) unsoldering the faulty capacitors, re-soldering the 20volt ones and putting the whole thing back together.

I wonder how many Samsung TV's are at the dump that could have been fixed for $3.60?

Cheers,

Bernie.

Hi, Oldturkey03,

Would you check my question above re-fading in and out - I don't seem to have the same problem as the others describe.

Cheers, Bernie.

I tried this and the screen looked great for a couple minutes! I was like. It's fixed!, but then it went back to flickering. I will note that there is a line that goes horizontally through my screen. The top half flickers and then fades in color and contrast and the lower half looks perfect. Do you guys think my TV just damaged? It's about 5 years old maybe?

I'm not sure if this is what's causing your problem, but it's such an easy and cheap fix, that it can't hurt to try it. My TV at that time was working ok, just taking ages to come on- up to 15 minutes! Eventually, it didn't come on at all, and we were shopping around for a new one, when my wife thought of checking the internet for a cause. If we'd called in a repairperson, the chances are he or she would have replaced the power supply - and we'd have had a bill for several hundred dollars.

The TV cost us $1500 in 2010, and the nearest equivalent would have cost $900 when we were looking before I fixed it, so it's worth trying to fix it yourself.

Hey Bernie I am having this problem with my Samsung flat screen. I believe i had this problem before and it was still covered under warranty so best buy came to fix it. It was the bulb or a light something that cost $3.60. They guy said that if we had this problem again then to try and do it ourselves because they will charge like$300 to do it without warranty. I was not home only my husband was and he is away for a while now. Please let me know what i need to buy or do to fix my Tv myself. I would really appreciate it thank you.

It looks as if all Samsung LCD/LED TV's begin having its colour problems immediately the warranty period expires (ie. just after 5yrs). I bought my TV in 2012 and just after 5yrs the colour problem is here. Well let me read some of your answers to see if I can get any useful info

Most likely this problem is the T-Con (Timing Controller) board. The Gamma IC has failed. You can replace the board, or if you are skilled enough with removing and soldering surface mount components, you can replace the failed IC on the board for a few dollars plus shipping. The IC is most likely AS15- followed by a letter suffix.
