MacBook Pro uses my new battery but does not recognize it

Hello everyone,

I am currently in Togo for an Internship. Two days after I arrived, the battery of my Macbook Pro Unibody 13’’ (bought in septemeber 2011) started acting strange.

I had charged my computer for a whole night, however two days later when I arrived at work it wouldn’t start and the left-side battery level indicater wouldn’t light up. I figured perhaps it was just a glitch or the battery hadn’t charged well, as it had approximately 1000 cycles. I plugged in my computer and it started up normally, the battery symbol indicated 79%.

The next day the exact same thing happened, however the magsafe light stayed green and after five minutes a black x appeared on the battery. After three hours, the battery symbol returned, this time indicating 79%, however the magsafe life was still green and the battery was not charging. Then the black x reappeared and didn’t leave. The battery led indicater would not light up either. The system did not recognize the battery anymore.

I tried many different things : rebooting, resetting SMC, resetting NVRAM/PVRAM, opening the computer and unplugging then replugging the battery, putting the magsafe adapter in the freezer (i thought that because there might have been noise in the electric current, as it is not very reliable in Togo, and so perhaps a fuse had blown inside the adapter). Despite all my efforts, the battery still was not recognized.

Eventually, after reading many threads online, I arrived to the following conclusion :

There could be one of three problems :

- The battery could be dead

- The Left Side LED Battery level indicator could have a default

- The Battery controlling chip on the logic board could have a problem

I thought that the simplest answer would be the solution so I ordered a new battery on Ifixit.com and installe dit in my computer. When I installe dit, the Left Side Battery level indicator very briefly lit up (all 8 green LEDs). However, the new battery was not recognized either and the Magsafe light stayed green.

I tried again everything I had tried with the old battery with no result. However, I noticed that I could unplug the magsafe adapter during startup and shutdown, and while the gray screen was present the computer would not shutdown (I mean : it would shut down when I had ordered it to shut down, however it would shut down normally and not turn to black when I removed the magsafe adapter). During start up, the computer would go to sleep when the lock screen appeared.

So I tried this today :

I started up the computer. When the gray screen appeared I disconnected the Magsafe cable and switched to recovery mode. The recovery mode worked fine with no source of energy so I figured it was using the battery. I then rebooted from recovery, expecting the computer to go to sleep at the lock screen, but it didn’t. Instead i could use the system normally, on the battery charge.

All my issues are not solved however as :

- The battery symbol indicates 0% battery, when I click on it it says : « estimating remaining time, power source : battery »

- If I plug in the magsafe connector, it does not charge the battery and the LED light stays bright green

- The left side LED battery indicator still doesn’t work.

- If I look at the system report I get this information on the battery :

I am a bit lost on what to do now : should I wait for the battery to be drained (as it is new, it may need to calibrate itself ) ? Is the problem more serious (for instance do i need to change the logic board) ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance to those who will be able to answer me.

PS: Please apologize any grammatical, syntaxic or spelling errors, english is my second language

This is the volunteer DIY help forum Apple support has this. Further occasionally a battery is bad straight out of the box. Perhaps you meant to contact iFixit Directly?

Thank you for your response. The Ifixit battery is not bad since i managed to run the computer on it for a while. It's just that the computer does not seem to recognize it most of the time, as was the case with the old one.

I also already tried the slution you mention, with no success.

I was just asking to see if anyone had had a similar problem or had any ideas about it, since i will not be able to go to an apple store for at least a month and i would really like to solve it.
