Microphone not working after LOCA UV glue repair

I cracked the screen on my S3 a few weeks back, fortunately just the front glass. I replaced the broken glass with a new one from ebay, used 2mm double sided tape to hold it in place, it worked great.

Until the other day when I tried bonding the glass to the LCD using LOCA UV glue. I got the glass bonded to the LCD nicely, that part went well, but for some reason the microphone stopped working.

At first the microphone did work a tiny bit, it was able to pickup loud knocking noises. I tried using a needle to clean out the microphone hole, on the bottom of the phone, that didn't help. Next I opened the s3, removed the main board, and checked both the microphones. Could not see any obvious problems, except that the microphones were covered in LOCA glue, still in liquid state. I cleaned the microphones, and very gently used the needle to clear the loca from the tiny hole on the microphones.

After putting the phone back together, the microphones now don't pickup any noise at all.

The rest of the phone is all working fine, just microphones not working.

should I try replace the microphones? is it a difficult job to replace the microphones?

Any help appreciated.

Colin, "except that the microphones were covered in LOCA glue, still in liquid state. " once the LOCA hardened it glued your mic closed. You will have to replace it to get it working again. Appears as if they are soldered. The image shows both mics and has the description number on it as well. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for the reply oldturkey03, i think this repair is probably too difficult for me if it does require soldering.

But, i might attempt it anyway if I can find a suitable soldering iron.

just take your time and all you need is something like a 15W soldering iron. Check ifixit for guides on solder repair. Practice on a couple of old boards until you get a feel for it. Best of luck to you.

I know this is an old post but thought someone may find it useful still.

The mic that will need replacing is the one at the bottom of the mainboard next to the usb connector. unfortunately you will need someone with the knowhow to replace this due to it being surface mounted and will require a hot air rework station to replace and not just a soldering iron.

I have replaced many of these in the past and I recommend buying a few mic's. they are only around £1 each

I have a problem which my the mic stop working after i change the usb port now charge good but no the mic when i put speaker the mic is mute too what do you think is this problem???

I had the same problem. I took the motherboard out and sonicated it in about 90% isopropyll alcohol. I think 70% rubbing alcohol from drug store would work too. I only used enough in glass to cover the microphone. I let it dry for a few hours and it was working again. I wouldn't go poking the tiny hole with a needle, as I think that would dammage it. Next time you use glue, take out the motherboard first. I learned my lesson.

Here is the S3 Mic Repair video that was just completed today. This should walk you through the galaxy s3 microphone repair and replacement.

You do not need a soldering iron for this repair. Only a reflow heat gun. If for some reason there was not enough solder on the board after removing the initial mic then you would need a soldering gun otherwise you won't need as seen in the galaxy s3 microphone repair video link below.
