iMac display turns black, it's getting worse.

Hello, i have an iMac 27'' i7 2.8 Late 2009.

I have the problem that my always turns black after a few seconds. I can start the system and most of the time log in but then it's over. I can get it to work again using the sleep/wake up button but only for a few seconds. When the display turns black, the system itself is still fully running and i can use it over my network with another iMac (remote thing). The problems started out of nowhere yesterday. Yesterday i could fix it by putting the brightness one tick lower than max., after I did that i could use the whole day (browsing, video game everything worked).

Now this morning it doesn't even work using lowest brightness.

Oh and it's completely black, I can't see anything using a flash light.

I can't really afford a new one or the fancy apple repair prices , so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Seems like you have a failing backlight, which since you have an LED screen would most likely mean a display replacement.

I would contact APPLE. They may still stand behind this problem, or. offer you (ask for) a depot repair which is a flat rate repair, the best price you'll find anywhere.

I agree with machead here your display is likely having a problem, but it maybe the thermo sensor on the display thats shutting it down. Try installing Temperature Gauge from the Apple Apps Store or some other like app. That way you can monitor the sensors and the fans

Thank you machead and Dan for your answers. I'll contact Apple tomorrow and see what they say.

Meanwhile I did a temperature check with Temperature Gauge. I'm not sure but I think everything looks okay? (http://i.imgur.com/nKEIZ4h.png)

The platform controller looks like it's running hot. Are you using an external HD (using any port) or external display via ThunderBolt?

No not really, the only thing connected at the moment is the keyboard.

Enable logging in Temperature Gauge and Activity Monitor so you can catch the temps and what is running just when the display winks out. See if the temp is the same (hottest) on the controller each time you loose the display.
