Usually the board can be repaired. Replacing the motherboard as a repair solution is not recommended as it is almost as expensive as the whole device.

You should be able to source a motherboard for the model of PS3 specifically, providing you search for a board for the model number detailed under the console it should fit.
But as Tom has said, it might be cheaper to seek out a second hand PS3 online somewhere as a good motherboard could be almost as much as another console.
However, as we are all about recycling kit rather than binning it, I know I saw some motherboards on Ebay last night while hunting for my USB ports.
