Upgraded carbon copied hard drive but unrecognized.

I replaced my 500gb hard drive with a tb one and used carbon copy cloner so that I could run it immediately after installing the new one. When I turn the imac on the computer doesn't recognize it so I connected that drive with a USB adapter and it booted from that. I stuck that one back inside and basically carbon copied to a separate external tb drive to have something to run the computer that wasn't flimsy and as accident prone and have been running from that ever since. Every time I reboot it tells me it doesn't recognize the drive I installed inside. I've given up for a while because I figured the issue is maybe a connector inside that I may have damaged during the installation? Now that I can probably afford the part (if that's the issue) I would like to order it. No clue how to find it. I've been running my imac solely off an external drive and I'm really tired of wasting 2 outlets and of course the speed that I'm losing because of it.

It says Updates Available and restart to complete the updates. I've erstarted through this probably 5 different times and it always says the same thing as though it didn't update something. It is grayed out for me when I try to format the disk. So I guess that's probably the connection.

You've provided a very generic description of your machine (there's over one hundred different machines - over 50 if you just count Intel versions). So, help us help you by specifying the age and model of your machine.

One reason the age an model is important is that the type/speed of HD you can put in the machine makes a big difference and that is determined by age/date or manufacture... you can't put a SATA III (6GB/s drive) in a machine that was build for SATA I or SATA II (speeds 1/3 to 1/2 of "new" drives") and that, is what I think your problem is... so include the manufacturer and model of the HD.

Yes it could be a cable or damage to the logic board... but it could simply be that you need to slow your HD down.

here's what it shows up as on disk utility. It won't let me partition it because it says 0 bytes. Hopefully this picture link works. I also believe the reason my iMac always thinks it needs to update is because it's running on an external. I could be wrong though.

Kayla I think the 0 bytes- is because it's not formatted, there's no MBD to report on size and space used or free. OR (and this might be why formatting fails) you have a damaged cable or connector to that drive. OR you need and EFI update to use/run that disk. What update is the machine telling you it needs? (Normally I'd say listen to the machine it should know what update it needs - you 'd NOT LISTEN ONLY when YOU KNOW the update will pooch an App or Hardware you want to continue to use)

Apple used a "Apple priority heat sensor on the drive. Replacing with just a standard drive will cause the fans to race. The heat sensor cable is also different on the three major brands of drives. These drives are known to work: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-driv...

What brand was the original drive (make and model number? What brand and model number of drive are you trying to use?
