Replace standard 1TB HDD with a SSD

Hello,

I want to replace the standard hdd in my iMac with a SSD. I was wondering the best brand to buy for a Mac with the best reliability and reviews. Also, are there any problems to watch out for in the iMac? I know in the 2010-2011 model, the fan would run at full speed if the stock HDD was replaced. Would anything like that if I did that in mine?

Have you thought about going to the Apple store and seeing if they will upgrade your system with the Apple (or third party) SSD unit or doing it your self (leaving the HD alone)? I would recommend that first, while being a bit more expensive adding in the SSD option has its benefits creating a fusion drive. Here's the IFIXIT guide for Apple SSD option.

If that is not an option then replacing your HD with a SSD will be tricky here. Yes, you do have the fan issue to deal with but the bigger issue is getting the drive to fit. The problem here is the HD is a 3'5" drive and the SSD is typically 2.5" (without any added case). Review this IFIXIT guide HD Replacement guide. Consider the adapters you will need here and how the cable harness will need to be routed (not much slack).

If you do it yourself you'll need a plate adaptor to mount the SSD into which then screws back into the old hard drive bay. You'll also need an inline temperature sensor as Mac drives have sensors so the fans know when to kick in - if you don't have a sensor the fans will run at full tilt all the time - plus you'll need some software to enable Trim... buy the full version for this as will save you heaps of pain after doing a system update and forgetting disable the Trim software before updating.

Takes about 45 minutes to fit the new SSD etc but will take a while backing up from Time Machine.

Unless you have all the correct tools (screen suckers/torx drivers and knownow or the confidence to perform open heart surgery on your iMac then take it to a shop and let a trained engineer do it.

Cheers

Dan
