Can I replace the hard drive with an SSD

I am thinking about replacing the hard drive in this model with a 1TB SSD SAMSUNG EVO to keep the Mac for another 3 to 5 years. I wanted to know if this is possible and what SSD iFixit would recommend. I know that they cost around $600 however to upgrade to another Imac or buy refurbished would be anywhere from $1200 to $1800. I like the display however want to compare this scenario and purchasing the 27inch and also maybe replacing the hard drive with an SSD.

You may find adding a SSD better than replacing your current HD.

Here is the IFIXIT dual drive carrier guide which replaces the optical drive for either a HD or SSD Installing iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267 Dual Hard Drive. As long as you don't mind giving up your built-in optical drive this is a great way of moving forward.

Doing a whole sale replacement of your HD can be done as well. You will need to deal with the HD's thermal sensor as removing it will confuse the systems cooling management causing the fans to run at full speed. While you can fake the system out by wiring in a replacement sensor or by using some software you do need to deal with it.

One last issue is making sure your AC power is stable. I would strongly recommend having a fill-in UPS as any power disruption during a write cycle on the SSD can corrupt the SSD (more so than a HD).

Good point Mayer! On the HD recall, it had slipped my mind.
