Freezing, screen black sometimes?

I bought a refurbished iBook G3 from DV warehouse not too long ago. It was fine at first, then i began having problems. It has Mac 10.4.11 installed, and I added a huge memory chip so now it has 600-700 in memory (can't remember exactly) But basically it came without enough memory to even support the operating system, much less anything I downloaded, so I upgraded the memory, but it didn't help.. It is freezing constantly. Every once in a while, it is able to run for a while, but typically it freezes within seconds or minutes of being on. Then sometimes when I go to turn it on, the screen is completely black. I can hear it loading and everything, but the screen is black, so I have to force quit it, and restart. I had called DV Warehouse, and they informed that I must have downloaded something that did not agree with it, and that I have to purchase the disc, and restore it. Does that sound accurate? They told me it would be like ten dollars on ebay, but all the ones I am finding for full install are 50 or more. I just imported my itunes library onto it with my backup discs very painstakingly because I had to keep force quitting, and so I am afraid that I may have to do it again if I buy a new disc. Can you run itunes on 10.4? Because if so, maybe that would be cheaper? Any suggestions??? Oh, and I payed 199$ for it, so I really don't want to have to replace it...And I also just noticed that the power light is also out when the screen is black, but I can definately hear it loading.

Disk utiliy is found under Programs -> Utilities. If possible for you, hook the G3 to another Mac with a firewire cable. Start your iBook holding down the "T" key. It should appear as normal drive on the other Mac and you can use the disk utilities from there.

When your computer acts up, try to sqeeze it left to the trackpad (press it down). Does that any difference? Could be the old graphicchip problem with the iBook G3s.

Well I "verified disk" and it said nothing was wrong. Last night I was on it for an hour and a half, and nothing bad happened, so I was able to do that and try to free some disk space. I have 4.57 MB free.

I'd make more free space on the disk. As a rule of thump, you shoudn't cram more the 80% of its capacity onto a harddrive.

How can i do this? I have cleared everything I can get rid of. Can you buy extra space? How bad is the amount of space I have? I had just imported 1500 songs into my itunes library. But that is all I really have on there. And it was freezing far before I did that..

You can always install a bigger harddrive, though its not that easy on iBooks. The reason why you should'd cram the disk is, the while running, the OS need some extra hd-space for swapping.

Have you tried sqeezing the machine as mentioned?

The right spot is around in the middle of the area left to the trackpad. For better instructions google something like iBook and clamp.

Thanks so much for the answers! When i start it I now push down on the left of the trackpad like you said, and it no longer goes black. For some reason the freezing seems to be getting better on its own. Sometimes I can be on there forever and not have problem. So I never know.

It could be a bad install, bad HDD, or the RAM or numerous other things. if you can get it to run long enough, run disk utility on the hard drive. Are the sticks of ram by the same manufacterer and are they the same speed? That could cause problems.

I asked a Mac tech on another website which RAM sticks to get. But this problem was happening before I ever updated the RAM. How do I find disk utility?

DV Warehouse sold me the same model iBook and I had the same problem. When I contacted Customer Service about the black screen, their response was basically, "Well it worked just fine when we shipped it. SO IT MUST BE something on your end...did you install additional software or download something on the internet?)

Long story short, after the warranty period expired, I learned that my iBook G3 has a poorly soldered graphic chip. And since I'm not about to set my iBook on fire to fix it, that $300 laptop now sits on my desk as a paperweight.

Moral of the story? I won't buy anything more from DV Warehouse. To me, their Customer Service department is a lot like a sleazy, fly-by-night seller on eBay.

btw, here's the iBook-on-fire repair:
