Installing os 10.6 retail disc on wiped HDD?

Family member gave me his old Macbook Pro Duo Core. Only stipulation is I have to reinstall os 10.4 (has os10.6) and wipe hdd. No problem, only original installation dvd wont install past last stage. Just sits and ideals. Have tried several times. Verified HDD in disc utility= All good. Loads of Storage (40% free). Disc envelope states that it is for this machine. Laptop boots up and runs just fine but it still wont complete a erase and install with original install disc. I do have a retail os 10.6 disc but if I load that it isn't giving me an erase and install option (hdd not erased).

Question is, If i Erase the HDD in Disc Utility can I install os 10.6 straight from the retail disc or does there need to be existing os 10.4 architecture there?

This system can run the last version of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". However, it cannot boot in 64-bit mode nor does it support "OpenCL". It cannot run versions of Mac OS X more recent than 10.6.8.

That being said I think your HD is munged… or there's some other hardware problem. You can not erase a disk while booted from it… you have to boot to the install disk use Disk Tools to erase and repartition in GUID format. If install is hanging you could be trying to write to bad blocks… there is a way to eliminate bad blocks but it takes forever. I would be faster and simpler to put a new HD in it… be sure you use a SATI or SATA II not a SATA III disk.

I am having the same problem...I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro Unibody and I just replaced the HD with another that I had formatted from my Toshiba. I partitioned it for the MacBook so that I could install OS X Snow Leopard onto it, however whenever I boot from the disc, it hangs at the white page with the grey Apple logo on it. No install menu, nothing. It's beyond frustrating and I am not about to waste my money going to a professional. Any advice?

Did you use a SATI or SATA II and not a SATA III disk?

Try holding the option key when the macbook is booting, see if it will get into the startup window, if it doesn't most likely a bad hd or another hardware issue
