Disc drive replacement possible?

Has anyone tried to replace there disc drive yet? Only asking because sending mine in for repair is the biggest pain in the world and my system has been in the mail or Microsoft possession longer then it has been with me.

If the teardown is any indication, then you should be able to replace it yourself.

If you keep the drive controller board and replace just the drive chassis, it should work.
