LCD Back light doesn't come on anymore after accidental water spill.

Hi All,

My cat spilled a glass of water that was on an ottoman where the macbook air was cause a puddle to form right where the laptop was sitting. I don't know how long the back part or the laptop was under the water we were gone for about 2 hours. I cleaned it up dried it stuck it in a bag of rice for 48 hours. The macbook air turns on and if i plug in an external monitor to it we can use it but the built in monitor no longer has light. If I shine the light through the back apple logo I can see the middle of the screen and am able to barely click menus and other stuff. I have been reading all over the net for the last 4 days and looks like it may be a fuse problem but am unsure since most of them don't sound like my exact situation and also other mention it may be the logic board may be damaged. I have read that it may be a good thing that it was just filtered water. I have taken pictures of the macbook air logic board. Would i be able to just replace the screen? my apple care expired 12 days ago although i dont think it would matter to apple since it says liquid damage is not covered.

please help, thank you

If you have experience with soldering small electronics/logic boards you're qualified to DIY. If not better to take it to an Apple Certified Repair center or a computer repair center and have them check the wled driver. That is where I'd start... depending on the cascade your display may be unaffected.

Armando, first skip the rice. It does not do anything but waste time. Always disassemble the device and clean it immediately. In your case I still recommend that you clean the board with a high grade (90%+) isopropyl alcohol and a small brush. While you clean the board, check to see if you find any obvious damage. Remember that water damage is the toughest repair, since you never know which component has failed. That is also the reason for "most of them don't sound like my exact situation" Your fuse is reference designator F9700 and it is a 3amp 32V in a 603 package. Check it for continuity. The other component that loves to fail is the LED driver U9701 which is in the opposite side of the board. Let us know what you find.

Thank you both for your response. I don't want to cause any more possible damage to the board I'll clean the board and test the fuse as you said and then we'll see where we go from there. most likely I will end up taking it to the apple store close by.

thanks
