What's going on with the display on Toshiba Satellite A205-S4629?

Laptop will only boot when the AC adapter is disconnected, and then, the display will not display any characters, only a blank screen (but back lit). Once the system starts to boot, however, you can plug the AC adapter back in and it will continue to boot. With the screen being blank, I cannot tell what is actually taking place. All I get is drive activity for about 5 minutes or so, and then some type of musical alert (probably asking me for some type of response). I can't tell what type of response is necessary because I get nothing on the screen. I don't have an external monitor to plug into the VGA port to tell if the on-board video is bad or just the display. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Correct on question one. Lights will flash briefly, hard drive light will

flash for a moment, then nothing. Unplug the AC adapter and turn it on,

then the display backlight will come on (nothing displayed, though), then

all kinds of drive activity for about five minutes. After about a minute or

so, you can plug the AC adapter back in and drive activity will continue.

At the end of the 5 or so minutes, there is an audio prompt that something

has happened or been completed. I just can't see anything on the screen to

tell me what that something is. The machine will remain on until you either

hold the power button to turn it off or the battery dies. No broken hinges,

cracks or signs of stress. As for the battery, it is bad. Will only hold

about a 20 - 25 minute charge and then the system dies.

This is what I have done in a similar situation. When you start to boot your computer as soon as you push the power button, start rapidly pushing F2. (the same way you press F8 to log into safe mode). Your computer should start doing self testing. can let that run are you can push esc. Then you'll have. F 1 through 4 to run diagnostic test. if it doesn't boot into that mode. if you have a rescue disk, I even used fix utilities 10 or 11 rescue disk. I will have to do some experimenting because I don't remember which F key you continually push to open it in the boot mode. I think it is F-10 (yes F 10 is correct) then you can change the boot order and have your cd-rom boot first after you change the boot order as soon as you turn it back on open ur CD ROM and put your rescue disk in and set the CD ROM and it should take off from there. then just follow the directions of the rescue disk. then you may have to F10 again. then once back in push F9 it to setup your defaults then then press f10 for save and exit. I hope that helps you to figure out. Keep me posted, we will get it figured out.

I managed to get hold of an external monitor and plugged that in. I was able to get video this way and can now access the system to glean the information I need. I'm guessing that the ribbon cable connecting the laptop's display to the main board is damaged or else I wouldn't be able to get video with an external monitor. The AC adapter issue I haven't been able to figure out as yet. I still have to boot the laptop without the AC adapter connected, then wait about a minute or two before I can plug the AC adapter back in. If I do things that way, I can get a successful boot. I'm debating if I want to send the laptop in to have the display issue fixed, or just use an external drive and something like Norton Ghost to either image the entire drive, or just grab my personal stuff off it and then trash it for a new machine. It's probably not worth the effort to fix the display as it will most likely cost more to fix than the system is worth. Of course, I can always just buy a cheap monitor for it and use it as a secondary desktop system, thus getting as much use out of it as possible before it finally gets trashed.

Thanks for the input, though.
