Why isn't my new hard drive copying data?

I purchased the 500 GB SSD Hybrid 2.5" Hard Drive and used it to replace my optical drive. Then with disk utility, erased the drive and my computer recognized it. But it doesn't seem to be receiving data. I have verified and checked for errors with disk utility and it seems to be fine.

I attempted to clone my old drive to the new one but receive an "input/output error"

I tried reinstalling my OS (Lion) onto the new drive, but it keeps rebooting and "downloading more components" which it did for about 20 hours but nothing appears to be on the drive.

I tried to copying my pictures folder into it. It says copying the items will be completed in 15 minutes, yet it's just been stuck there for an hour.

Any advice? What am I doing wrong? Is it possible I didn't physically install it correctly? THANKS!

If you can 'see' the drive within Disk Utility thats a good sign the connectivity to the HD is good. You could have a format issue what did you choose within Disk Utility?

But in your case it's likely the drive you got is too fast for the optical carriers SATA connection. Who's drive did you get? And what is your exact model. If you don't know give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can look it up.

Hi Dan!

Within disk utility I would choose "erase" to erase and that would appear to work.

The drive I got is the seagate 500 GB SSD Hybrid 2.5 ...ifixit gives it the product code: IF107-098-1

My macbook pro 15" Unibody is the late 2008 model I believe. The last 4 digits of my serial number are: 91G0

Thanks so much for your help!

I don't think you'll get this drive to run correctly in the optical carrier. The rub here is the auto SATA I/O speed sensor in this drive. If you had a fixed SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) or SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive I think you would have better luck.

But lets try a few things first before we throw the towel in.

First lets make sure your systems firmware is at the latest level. Review this Apple TN: EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Using an external drive case: USB or FireWire {best choice} or SATA adapter to USB cable take your Seagate SSHD hybrid drive and see if you can reformat it and install the OS on it.

Now with it still in the case or via the cable alter the startup disk setting in your preferences so this drive is the boot up disk. Restart your system and let it boot up - Success? If so lets try the next configuration.

This time take your current HD out and swap it for the SSHD drive. Now lets see if it boots up - Success? If it is working the next thing to try is to put your Apple HD into the Optical drive carrier. But, before you do that you should make sure you have a backup of your data (really the first thing you should have done before even started any of this). Success?

Now the good and bad news:

* If your system is now working you have proven your Seagate drive's auto SATA I/O speed sense services is not able to work within the optical drive carrier which is what we had encountered on a few systems our selves.

* Having your Seagate SSHD as the primary drive is a good thing as you will get the best performance for this drive.

* The Bad thing here is the Apple HD's anti-crash services are not functional in the optical drive carrier so you must be careful here as any big bump will crash your drive.

Because of loosing the crash protection on the HD in the carrier we stayed with a straight SSD drive in the carrier. But, here too we did encountered issues with the newer generations of SSD's having the same issue with the auto SATA I/O sense services so we stayed with the older fixed SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) & SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives. The only problem here is the good ones are hard to find new now. So we stopped doing this configuration and stayed with the SSHD drive alone setup. which is were we ended up here.

I would recommend putting your older HD into a good FireWire external HD case. Using it as a backup drive.

If you had planed to have added storage internally (having both drives) I would return your 500GB drive and get the larger version of the Seagate SSHD drive (750GB or 1TB).

Just so you know we have upgraded quite a few of our systems (200+) with the Seagate SSHD's and have had great success with them.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much for your help, I'll follow all these instructions and let you know what ends up happening. Really appreciate it!
