Vertical lines on display (regular pattern, photos inside)

Hello Community,

i just received a MBPro 15": It's fully working but showing vertical lines on the display from time to time.

The screenshot i took via the OS has NO verticals lines, so i guess the graphics chip is fine. The photos taken show the lines (see below please)

Strange: The lines appear and re-appear from time to time. Sometimes they can be seen for a maybe a week, then for several days there are no stripes at all - just a brilliant and clean looking display. When changing the angle of the display back and forth, nothing happens to the screen (neither with lines, nor without)

Has anyone experiences such a behaviour already? Before starting to completely dismantle this MBP and replacing parts, i'd first like to ask you what could be the cause for this error?

Thank you very much.

Chris

First we need to know your EXACT machine, please give us the last three figures of you serial number, (located in the battery compartment. Also hook it up to an external monitor to see if the issue persists and let us know your results.

As i actually don't have an external monitor available for testing, this part of my answer maybe needs some more days.

Thanks for your help

Chris

Your machine has the nVidia 8600 GPU. There was a class action suit filed against Apple open the failures of this chip. The free repair program that Apple offered has now expired. You can send the logic board or the whole machine off and either get the chip rebelled or replaced. Do a search on eBay for "nVidia 8600 & repair". to get your options. I have used Brickfence, their a little slow, about a month but Jim is a good guy to work with.

Hello Mayer,

can you tell me about the price i have to expect? Is it the chip itself that is faulty or the soldering (BGA on bottomside of the chip)? For the soldering i have some guys around.

But first: Can i exclude the display cable as the cause for this display error?

Thank you for your help

Chris

PS: Has anyone a link for the terminated repair-program at Apple for that chip? I'd like to know, what they wrote …

To eliminate the display cable hook it up to an external monitor. If the problem persists it id the GPU. If the problem goes away on the external, then look next to the cable.

As for Brickfence I am getting this message on eBay: This seller is currently away until Jun 27, 2014, and is not processing orders at this time. You can add this item to your watch list to purchase later. Here's his add on another product he fixes: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111276411861?ssP...
