Is Ram upgrade viable

The RAM (4GB) in this system is soldered to the main logic board. This system does not have any means to add additional memory. Asus made a second model in this series a X552EA which has 8GB soldered.

Can I add more ram in place of the optical drive? I do not use the optical drive and wish to use the area. Sorry if its a dumb question. I know nothing.

The optical drive's connection (SATA) is not suitable for RAM (DDR3).

Think of it this way we have water and gas lines in our house we can't swap which can go in which line can we? Thats the case here. Sorry ;-{

But, you might be able to swap it out for a HD or SSD drive.

I just put an 8gb ddr3 ram chip in to replace the 4gb.

I also recommend putting in an SSD Hard Drive.

and upgrading the wifi card to dual-band 2.4/5 ghz with Bluetooth.

Performance has improved.

an extra $100.00 was worth it!

There is a single DDR3 slot on the back of the board. For the X551MA that I have, it was possible to remove the 4gb card and put in a DDR3 (low power, but backwards compatible) 8GB single stick. Just because you can't see it on the front of the motherboard, you should remove the screws and have a look on the back to make sure! If they have 4gb of RAM soldered on there, I would love to see a picture and get a part number for the chip(s) they use! :)

So, i was looking into this subject, and found this. I have the same laptop you upgraded, so can you tell me what the RAM card was that you used to upgrade to 8GB? Just so I dont end up wasting money and time by accidentally buying something that doesnt work...
