MBP 17" will not wake up from sleep

Closed the lid one evening. Opened it next morning and nothing happened. And whatever I try, nothing has happened since!

When I open the lid, the front LED is on (solid, not breathing), the fans run (quietly) and the hard drive runs (but I don't hear the heads moving).

I have removed the battery and power, left it for a day. No luck. Exactly the same. No chimes, no display, just LED, fans and (non-booting) disk.

I have used the tutorial here to remove the RAM battery as well.

Still the same.

I'm writing this question in the hope that there is another solution than a new logic board!

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Request for clarification: If you removed the battery and power, it is no longer sleeping. This is NOT a wake from sleep issue, your MBP fails to boot. Unfortunately you can not change a Question Title in ifixit.com, so I suggest a new question. Include the info about the failure to wake as background, but that is not the issue now.

One of my machines has failed to wake from sleep for years, but it still boots up fine every morning...

If this is not the case, please let me know.

Hook it up to an external monitor to see if it is putting out a signal.

I've sent in three MacBook Pros this month with this issue and Apple has repaired them all for free. Sorry I didn't see your question sooner.

Try your luck with an SMU reset. Remove power chord and battery. Press the power button for at least 5 seconds. Reassemble and keep your fingers crossed.

Please do this FIRST. If it is the SMU/PMU, this may work. You have probably already reset it, this will make sure. No need to leave the battery out, pressing the power on button does the same thing faster. _____________ Please add a comment if you found instructions on this site telling you to leave the battery out - please tell me where, so I can fix that issue! _________ Thanks!

Try this. Hold the screen down as you release the catch and let it open slowly. Open it one half inch and wait for the screen to come up then finish opening it. MacBooks and MacBook Pros of this vintage seem to share this problem.

Thanks for the advice guys. I tried all the above and lots more. Nothing helped. In the end, I took my MBP to an Apple retailer here in Belgium where I live and asked them to diagnose it.

The answer was - even though they tried to check the graphics card failure with their (Apple vendor only) software, they couldn't get any kind of startup signal and concluded the logic board was dead.

I ordered one and they gave me a price of 450 EUR +vat (way cheaper than eBay items!!). In 2 days I had it in my possession. I used the ifixit guide on this site to help me replace it (saved another 100 EUR!) and I am know writing this article on my week-old logic board :-)

i did ve the same problem, apple retailer said that mother board ve to be change, but in fact, i let it charge when the mac was running without screen till the next morning, then it was very hot , i shut it down , wait a quart hour and then the screen suddenly work again, now it s working very well, my mac book pro was not used for more than six month cause of this, can you believe it?

also i did put an external screen when i try and try to shut down and up many time , i try so much stuff .

happy to not ve change the mother board

with mac you never know

oups just to say in my previous message i said "wait a quart hour and then the screen suddenly work again" and in fact it s "wait a quart hour then turn it on and then the screen suddenly work again"

i can say that i ve also open it take off the hard drive put it in a case of an other external autorun 250mb hard drive, empty it & put it back @ in the MBP
