I almost always have to do a smc reset.

I have a 2009 Imac 24. Often when I come into my office and try to boot the computer its dead. I have loaded it up twice and took it to apple to have it returned to me because it always works fine when I get there. So I put 2 and 2 together and realized when it doesn't boot if I unhook everything for 10 mins and reconnect it boots up. Apple has offered for me to bring it back but its a long walk through the mall with a heavy iMac and I want to fix it if I can.

You can also encounter issues with the HD when you put your system into sleep mode.

What happens here is the HD spins down and after sitting and woken it may not spin up or spin up in the allotted time the OS is expecting.

From what you describe here its starting to sound like that.

Try this:

Setup if you don't have already a USB thumb drive as a bootable drive (you can also setup an external FireWire {being the fastest I/O} or USB HD. Then boot up under it and run Disk Utility from it. You may want to make sure you have a full backup of the Apps and Data first in case you need to repair the disk.

If the drive still is encountering problems after doing the disk repairs you may need to do a complete reformat and do a low level testing of the drive. Given the age you may want to think about a new HD. Just make sure you get the correct SATA speed drive. This system requires a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive, a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive is too fast for it.

I ordered a new HD. It will be here monday or tuesday. I hope you are right. Thank you for taking the time to answer, i appreciate it.

Did you do the disk repairs first? I would recommend double checking using the USB thumb drive setup as a bootable disk. In any case make sure the new drive is SATA II (3.0Gb/s) if the disk repair failed.

When I try to boot from the FireWire drive the computer shuts off.

When I first took the iMac in they ran a hardware test and couldn't get the computer to act up. So I used the money I put aside and bought a data doubler SSD. I did the fusion drive set up. The computer boots great and runs fast. Just the original problem is still happening. It's like you stated. A deep sleep it doesn't recover. Then I'll come in and try to start it .. Nothing, unplug and replug the power cord and away it goes. I love the computer it runs fantastic besides the sleep and powering up.

Can you try a USB thumb drive setup as a boot disk? If the system shuts down just from the FireWire disks load then the issue is the power supply. By trying a USB thumb drive which is a lot less of a load the system should boot up without any problems.

Was this an Apple Store or an authorized Apple service center you brought the system to?

In the morning I can see a yellow light in the bottom right corner, there is a reflection on my glass deck, when I try to wake it the light dims and I have to unplug it and replug it in and it works. But I can use the computer all day with no problem, its waking from a sleep it happens. A long sleep.

lapo +1 If I could I'd give you a second.

Power supply was the culprit. Everything is up and restored and running like a champ. Thank You Dan and Lapo for your help.

I am curious tho the old PSU had a bunch of aluminum fins attached to it that did not go on the new unit. Nowhere to mount them.
