Power shuts off after releasing button

Hey guys,

I have a 2008 15" MacBook Pro 2.5GHz (A1260) penryn having a power issue (seems to be common).

Now I'm well aware of the nvidia graphics issue, but it seems to be more of a power issue than anything. I haven't ruled that out yet, however I've checked the HD, reset SMC (hold power button until lights blink) and still the CPU, as well as lights shut down as soon as the power button is released. Tried with Battery and without. I'm using your standard 85W charger and I've even taken the optical drive out. Before I take it in to the Apple Store (where I'll bet that they say its a logic board issue) I'd like to hear any ideas or suggestions from you wonderful people.

Thanks!

FYI: the product title is a bit confusing here, as the fails to show the full title which does indeed include the A1260 model. If you click on the title is will open up the listing of all of the IFIXIT guides for this series (1260 & 1226).

Your symptoms here are classic of the NVIDEA GPU/Controller issues.

You see the problem is two fold here. NVIDEA GPU chip Apple used ran hotter than they had spec'ed (which was the law suit Apple engaged in with NVIDEA) internally the chip via's broke down creating odd display issues caused by overheating damage. Apple offered at the time replacement logic boards which had a cooler running GPU.

But NVIDEA was also the supplier of the controller logic (integrated North & South bridge chip). It too had issues which people often confused at GPU problems. Here the heat buildup from the failing GPU weakened the solder joints (cold solder joint) and it also burn't it out.

In this case your issue is the controller not the GPU. Sadly, it really needs a new logic board. As you have both a bad GPU and controller chip.

Now the other shoe:

Apple has end of life'd this system so you won't get any help from them as they won't service your system. You should try going to an authorized Apple service center if you want to fix your system.

Another option here is to find a PCB board repair outfit that can replace the controller chip. I wouldn't try replacing the chip your self as you really need special gear and skills. But swapping out the logic board is something a DIY'er could do (one of the more advanced jobs).
