Sound and Airport missing

My MacBook suddenly lost its airport and sound - the airport came back intermittently, but the sound has never come back – everything else seems to be working fine.

It is almost as if the computer never even had either sound or an airport – the airport comes up with a blank fan and apparently isn’t installed, and the sound has a crossed circle. I have tried wiggling the jack socket and nothing happens (it does not have sound through headphones either).

As far as I am aware it suffered no trauma beforehand, I presume that the sound card and airport card both came loose, but am only guessing. I am yet to try the instructions for the airport, but notice there doesn’t seem to be anything about sound.

Also, I have tried restarting the computer using R+P+ALT+Apple, which worked occassionally for the airport, but could be coincidental.

If anyone could help or even explain what has happened I would be very grateful!

Is the headphone jack glowing?

What is the output of Applications->Utilities->System Profiler under Audio (Built In) andNetwork->Airport?

Firstly the headphone jack isn't glowing.

Applications->Utilities->System Profiler under Audio (Built In) it says ‘no output control’

and Network->Airport? it says ‘no device found’ (or similar, the computer isn’t in front of me).

Here's a link to a discussion of your sound problem with cures. Please read all the way through as the fellow listed the wrong file the first time and then corrected it. It seemed to cure these people -- maybe it will help you. Ralph

For the sound, first take a look at this Q&A: sound not working properly

The airport part is 661-3890. First I would open it and check the connections for the cables and se-seat the airport card, here's how: MacBook Core Duo AirPort Card Replacement

I have been through the system preferences and it has not found any audio – the balance bar is at the highest, but does not move and the check box for mute it checked beside it (I am unable to uncheck it). Nothing is connected to the speaker port.

I also tried Repairing permissions In Disk Utility and rebooting, which hasn’t helped for the airport or the sound.

I am going to try to reseat the airport card, does anyone know where the sound card is located and if it is close to the airport card?

The Airport card might be loose

There is no "sound card" only a DSP chip on the motherboard. This would tend to point toward a damaged logic board, or at least that chip.

With proper equipment the fault may be diagnosed but it' not really a DIY kind of repar.

Your call as to spend the money to repair a box that old, or sell laptop for parts and put that money towards a new laptop.
